Depending on adjustment the thrust bearing is usually in contact with the pressure plate spring diagphram, not applying any pressure but still in contact and usually spinning, so when pressure is applied the noise (rattle) will stop or if completely stuffed get louder. Anyway if you have to remove the gearbox it is wise to replace the thrust bearing and the bearing in the flywheel, for little cost, regards Frank.
