Tdi Pulley tensioner bearing, desperate help please
Hi, I heare it was easy to replace the bearing on the pulley tentioner on my Tdi so in i go and whamo, it all sprung open and now i cant even pull it off cos the vuscus fan is in the way, what am i doing wrong? does the fan need to come off? aghh

Did you remove the drive belt first? What's gone sproing? A pic would be good, mate.

Brettsky, you're not supposed to pull the tensioner apart. Its not a serviveable item. You need to buy a newby

Remove the pulley
Thank you for your replies and a big thank you to Bazza for letting me call him for help.
So much for a non serviceable item but i can see why.
To any one waiting to do the same exercise the unit comes off in one piece but made in two pieces so in all its about 2'' deep, once the Belt has been remove the tensioner nut not the pulley nut and spin the fan around till you find the biggest gap on between the blades and you can slide off the tensioner in that largest gap, place the pulley wheel in a vice making sure you use timber either side of the pulley so you don’t mark the wheel, might need a rattle gun at this point to remove the pulley wheel (reverse thread) its not really supposed to be taken off as the whole unit is a non serviceable piece but anyways, remove the circlip. You will need a new circlip as removing it with out breaking it is imposable I found, remove the bearing and then reverse all of the above for replacement.
It is absolutely vital that when you have put it all back together before you start your disco that you double check that the belt has been replaced accurately and not assume because it all looks good from up above that it is ok underneath, get under your disco and look from there too. Silly me wondered why the disco wouldn’t turn over, rur rur rur the motor turned over slowly but wouldn’t start so I thought I will show you and jumped started from my duel battery which showed it what for, turned the key and whamo the bastered started you little ripper I thought instantly after it started there was smoke and bits of rubber flying around the engine bay, f@#k so quickly turned the key off to see what I had done wrong and where the belt goes around the very bottom wheel it was jammed between that and the sump and wore two nice V shapes in the belt.
I had no choice but to place the belt on properly and drive it to the local shop for a newbie.
Things we do.
But at least now it doesn't sound like there is a canary on steroids under the bonnet and probably saved $200 in labour, ooyehhh

Ps when you take the whole pulley assembly off make sure you place a bolt through the two halves just incase they part, cos if that happens to you, you will be in the **** just like I was but with sheer will power and determination a little Triton work bench two G clamps and a few bangs with a piece of wood I showed that non serviceable item who was the boss, lol.

I have since been told that you can change the bearing whilst still attached to the engine, give it a go first.

Thanks for the info, my tentioner bearing has just started 'singing' so I was thinking of giving this a go myself in the near future. Just out of interest, how urgent is it to replace it once it starts it's canary antics?

Thats an unknown, another member BAZZA took the belt off then undid the tentioner nut not the bearing nut pulled it forward and placed a I think he said 10c piece behind it and tightend it back up put the belt back on and the whistling stopped, when I got a friend to take my bearing off the the tentioner he studdied the bearing and sais it wasnt all that dry "he is a fitter and turner and old school bushy".
I was told by BAZZA if you take your bearing off and down to your local bearing shop it is a standard size but make sure you can get a curclip to suit, which is why I bought mine from P Senior Trading in england but I am sure you can buy the set here.
The UK suplyer give you instructions aswell not that they are all that clear, here is there email phillip.alisma@tiscali.co.uk
Personally if its whistling that has to mean the bearing is not at its best and for $20 its not worth the risk, especially as it is a Disco after all. Its like the oil you do it at 5000k intervals not 10000k for a reason, get in early

This is how I do mine...

Find a generic bearing....
Land Rover 300TDi Drive Belt Tensioner Bearing on eBay (end time 30-Jun-10 11:46:54 BST)
...pop off plastic dust cover and pack with good grease(as they're packed with hardly anything nowadays)
and carry on...only hard part is getting the circlip off...
