93 disco back door striker problem???

hi guys need some help ... tail gate door is banging over bumps so i been checking it out and seen the door striker is warn( the bit the door latches onto on piller of car) So i bought a new one. i started taking the old one out and noticed that there is a bit of metel or a nut in side piller? the problem is i cant seem to get to that nut or metal bit to hold it? ive taken trim off, the back tail light off, and where that is i still cant get to it. im worried that if i undo the striker all the wayout that nut bit will fall down in the piller and i wont be able to get it out to put the new one back in?
    Any advice would be appricated.

    I feel your frustration

If you cannot get to the nut you would have to think that the nut was initially spot welded to the Piller but it has become separated.

IF you can get the Striker undone enough to see the nut, can you glue the nut to the pillar??
It wouldn't have to be glued perfectly at all. All you would need is to glue the nut well enough so it doesn't fall down.
IF you can get to it, I would try and get some "Silastic" onto the nut or even some "Contact glue."
It may sound like a dumb idea, but you only need it to NOT fall down, so "Contact Glue" would be my 1st choice.

Get a piece of long headless bolt or threaded rod, install it in one of the holes in the metal plate. Then you can remove the striker and not lose the plate (which should stay there anyway but this makes sure)

do what Bee Utey said, but you will also want to check if the actual latch is tight. I just replaced the outside cover as it had broken - to cut this short I had to remove the actual door latch to do this, the bolts inside the door were as lose as. One of the reasons why I had the same problems as you with the rattling door.

the 3 Philips head screws on the edge of the door can be tight but the bolts inside the skin can be quite loose.

The plate that the striker bolt screws into is supposed to be loose, so as you can adjust in and out or up and down as needed, the plate should be retained (loosely) by a bracket inside the guard. Screw out the old striker bolt, screw in the new one, dont tighten it up too tight, slam the door or push it to where it should be, i.e. compressing the tailgate rubber, unlock and open door, striker bolt should be in correct position, if not adjust accordingly, Regards Frank.
