    That sinking feeling

    Hi all,
Was driving to the beach yesterday in my 97 D1 when something broke/let go in the seat and my oversized behind started sinking down into the seat cushion. It has lost all firmness and spring and now very uncomfortable. Does anyone know what I need to replace to get it back to normal? Or a second hand seat?
    Thanks
    Scott

Scott, I think it's quite a normal problem with D1s as mine had the same problem.
There's a metal & rubber webbing under the foam seat base itself, which seems to let go when of a certain age.

If you can find one, then a second hand seat is the way to go. It is possible to change just the webbing (or repair) but it's very fiddly

    Great info guys, thanks.
Ron, did you replace the whole seat or just the broken bit?

For a quick rough as guts fix, big zipp ties are you friend. Just thread them well back from the break so they dont pull straight through.

Sounds like you blew an air bag.

Did you get that smell in the cab when it happened?

They look pretty much the same as the old 2 door Rangie.
If so you should be able to buy a new suspension for less than $100.
Its pretty easy to replace but needs some strength.
I cut a notch in the middle of a big old screwdriver and pushed the hooks in.

    Thanks guys,
a mate suggested a local car upholstery repairer, Ive rung them and they are doing it next week. He's done them before, seemed to know what he was talking about and is cheaper and less hassle than chasing up a 2nd hand seat so will give him a go. Thanks for your ideas.
