Thread: D1 running temperature

Mine is the one that measure block (I got mine bolted to one of the head screws just behind the thermostat housing) and also has the coolant level sensor which is on the radiator plug.

I am yet to put one into the other D1 I have, which is the city runabouts (mums taxi) 300tdi. Worth every cent IMO as well.

Just wanted to resurrect this topic to share my experiences.

I have had an engine watchdog temp gauge for a little over 3 mths (since having the head gasket redone on my 98 tdi Disco 1 auto), and I've found that around town I average between 82 - 90 deg C. The probe is bolted using a bolt under the thermostat housing onto the front of the head itself. The highest I have had it since installing it is 96 deg C maintaining about 115k/hr on the F3 between Newc and Sydney with three big units in the car, 33 deg C and the aircon going.

I am expecting that once we hitch the camper and fill the car with family that over 100 degC is a distinct possibility.

When's a good time to pull over and give the little oiler a cool off (105 maybe??)

my V8 sits around 78-80 deg around town, going up the southern outlet (about 2kays long and fairly steep) it rises to about 87. Dont tow so cant comment on that.

it's the same story with my d1 v8 won't boil but the harder you work it the hotter it gets i found this quite unacceptable so i ditched the factory viscous fan and fitted a pair of fans from a ford mondao i also fitted an adjustable thermostat to controll the fan activation
now i can merciously thrash the bejesus out of my car, tow mountains in the summer with the ac on and the temp guage NEVER goes above 80 degrees
i highly recomend fitting an aftermarket set of electric fans
however i don't think you can use the mondao fans as i think the diesel radiator is smaller than the v8

can you put a few pics of the fans up please. what was involved in fitting them to the radiator, any tips etc

yep take some piccys tomorrow as it is dark here
it was so easy to fit these fans i nearly fell over
1 remove old fan from engine and fan shroud
2 buy from wreckers ford mondeo fans with shroud/housing
3 fit fan to radiator, it fits in perfect no cutting watsoever
4 drill some holes and secure a few zipties to top of shroud(pics will explain)
5 wire up fans

these fans are like a tornado compared to the standard fan i rigged mine up to automatically come on according to temperature but you could also have a override switch to turn them off when fording through water
the shroud sits in the bottom part of the radiator and even has a rubber thingy on it to stop it rubbing on the cores
also my car has no trouble starting with the fans activated
I swear the guy who designed these fans had a v8 disco as a drive car at home!

on my 300TDi i have a EM2 attached to the thermostat housing at the front. i have only had mine back on the road for a week or 2 since a new head was installed.
i get temps of 79-85 around town with or without AC, out of town going up a steep hill in second i got to 92 and was packing it but wiser heads on this forum will put me right.
yep i dont trust the "wonder gauge" on the dash at least put a mechanical gauge in if not a engine moniter

I have just done a little research with Engine Saver. Their agent in WA did some testing and got some very high readings. David tells me 120 degrees on the CHT gauge is still well on the safe side. Mine is a 3.9 V8 and it has been up to 114. The vehicle in WA was a Hiluxe diesel and got readings much higher than that I am told.
