    D1 running temperature

I have an Engine Saver on my D1 in which I monitor temperature, particularly when towing. What I wanted to ask is what is the temperature that others get, particularly when towing and going up hills?

My 300tdi runs normally on about 87... give or take. However, when im towing and driving up long steep hills (Tassie is full of these) my temp creeps and creeps up until it goes to about 104... last time peaking at 106. This seems like an excessive temp change, close to 20 degrees! Is this normal, or do I need to look into it?

I just had my rad rodded (it was 40% blocked) and thought this would make a difference, but hasnt. Could it be the thermostat not opening enough?

    Cheers,
    Carlos

Since putting in Madman EMS I keep an eye on everything as well.

Normal operating is the same as yours, gentle normal around town varies from 75-85. Under load can hit 100 easily. 4WD'ing up LONG STEEP hills (ie, high revs and slow) it hit 110, then I was stopping to let it cool a bit.

Funny thing is, the factory temp gauge gets to where it normally sits quickly (65-70degrees), and doesn't even move right up to 110 degrees!!!! And before I did my rad flush and new coolant, I did a hard drive towing bikes, hot and hilly, and I was letting temp gauge get to the top of the "normal" range before letting it cool down a bit. I would hate to think how hot it was getting then, I didn't have madman in at that stage......

Although I think my thermostat is fine its on my list of things to change, god knows when it was done last.

Thanks for the reminder, I also had no guage change on the dash during the whole temp range... scary thought! So you too have the same range then, interesting. Either were both over heating it, or its normal.

While 110 is not normal,, its acceptable for short periods,, I'm sure other AULROIANS will post their hot temps,,

I have a very similar temp range from my Engine Watchdog. 87 in winter and in summer with the aircon on it usually sits around 91 under normal no-stress driving.

I've found that when the engine does a lot of work it can get up to 106 quite easily, but equally when you ease off (eg get over the top of that really big hill) it cools down really quickly.

On one occasion about 6 months ago I had a heater hose blow off its connection going up a big steep hill south of Adelaide (my mechanic forgot to put a clamp on that hose after changing all my hoses and rodding my radiator ). All of my coolant was dropped on the road in a hurry. The temp got to 114 as I pulled over. The car's had no ill effects whatsoever from that little episode.

as above, normal driving is around 80-90degrees. but haven't seen it get nearly as high as a few!

hottest it's read was 94-95 i think, which corresponded with the highest EGT of (i think) 606degrees. that was up a hill, top of 3rd for close to 10minutes.

towed a 7x5 trailer with two bikes and fair bit of camping gear home from Marysville the other week and engine temp was still sitting just under 90.

Does the location of the sensor probe thing play a big part though? where have others put theirs?

    Carlos,
the standard temp gauge is not useful, because it is calculated in order to work with the V8 engine sensor bulb. So all readings are just in the same place from the scale.
One mate here has recommended to shunt or change some resistor in the gauge's printed circuit board. This change produces more movement in the gauge, so you can see how your engine's temp is varying.

If your rad is already rodded, i would suggest to test your fan coupling, prior to change thermostat. Check if its bimetallic spiral is not blocked with oil and dust...

    Regards

I suspect robzilla is right about the location of the probe/sensor, and what sort of system (ie measuring water temp or block temp). The temps that I have mentioned are for an Engine Watchdog system that measures block temp, with the sensor bolted on to the front of the head just below the thermostat

seriously tho, I will get one soon. So what brand is everyone using and is it water temp or block/head temp?? I think actual engine block temp would be the better??? yes or no

is this the one you guys are using http://cgi.ebay.com.au/LAND-ROVER-EN...item20b1b4c81c

Definitely the head, water level drops there first.
