I want to retain space in rear so if possible I'll avoid using side bins. At the moment they're great storage.
Just fitting 6x9's into the rear pillars will not give a significant increase to your bass response.
Open bass cones need air to generate the sound waves and the space behind the pillars of a Discovery simply isn't big enough to do that. For 6x9's to generate decent bass you'll need a cabinet size of around 4-5inches deep behind the cone.
You'd be better off increasing the air space behind the pillar trim and fitting a smaller speaker that doesn't require so much air volume to work properly.
I have 6" Rockford Fosgate speakers in my front doors and rear pillars but they sound quite naff without the sub to provide the bass.
Spacing will also be nessesary so you may have to compremise on something to get the better sound quality that you crave for.
I've spent alot of time and money on trying to acheive a really decent quality system in my Discovery but I also had to give up the side bins that you also want for convieniant storage.
Pictures are available if you want...just shout.
Regards.

You could always try to roof mount 2 10" or 8" subs like I am looking at doing.
Im just trying to work out the best way to bracket it all up at the moment. That would work if you dont use the space up high.
That was our old disco it got the speakers up out of the way. Try a search for Alpine window speakers.
