What are the advantages?
I just finished the replacement of the LT230 in my D1 with a later model D2 LT230 transfer with diff lock.
For those contemplating going along this path here are a few things that may Help.
1.The front output flange on the D2 Box is larger in Diameter so you will need to reuse your existing D1 LT230 out put flange.
2.There is no speedo output on the output shaft housing on a D2 transfer. So reuse your existing output housing from the D1 LT230.
3.The rear output shaft on the D2 LT230 does not have a speedo drive gear, just remove the drive gear from your D1 Transfer along with the shorter cylindrical sleeve and fit to the D2 output shaft.
4. The Hi / Low selector lever on the D2 transfer box is different to the D1, so you need to swap the lever and top cover ,( This is an assembly) as the D2 lever does not marry up with the linkage of the D1. Only 6 bolts, but as I found out after I had fitted the box and it was harder to work on. Best done before whilst box is out.But I didn't check before hand
5. I used my existing transmission brake, as I found the D2 hand brake cable must be retained under the console by a different method to the D1.
It should be a bit quieter now as the later boxes use different gear faces
Sorry I didn't take any pics, but it's pretty straight forward
