I will swap you the lot to turn mine into a 5 seater as I am going to rip my seats out any way but you will need the trim as well
Can the 2 dicky seats be added to a 5 seat disco to make it like a 7 seater?

I havent got one yet but if its possible it will open up more choices when buying.
This is an example: http://www.carpoint.com.au/all-cars/...d=1212B578B0A2
My 5 seater was turned into a 7 seat one about 8 years ago professionally (Southside L/R Brisbane), it used to be a kit that Landrover sold. It included two plastic panels to replace the ones behind the rear lights, as well as the seats and seatbelts themselves. They are very short inward-facing seats and as such are very dangerous in the event of an accident (which is probably why Landrover don't have them in more recent cars). Of course we never have accidents do we so that is irrelevant. The trouble is no matter how few kids there are in the car they always want to sit in the back ones. My installation was missing one of these panels,a nd between me and the dealer we forgot about it, I hardly notice it unless I am cleaning the car, I am sure I could adapt one from a 5 seat car, but it's not a priority. I see these kits come upon Ebay sometimes. I wonder whether the car needs an engineering certificate once it is done. I have never worried about it as I have never sold the car. But it might be a factor. My personal advice is get a car with head-rested forwards-facing seats - if you have got them, you'll use them!
Im only looking at D1s because of my price range which are inwards facing. The only forward facing 7 seaters I've seen are Pajeros but they dont have headrests.
Can the D3 dicky seats go into the D1?

In a word, no.
You might be able to use the generic rear-facing type, but the D2 has a longer rear section to permit forward-facing seats and the D3 is entirely different.
You don't get headrests with the D1 seats either!
I went Pajero, was satisfied with the risk/benefit equation (but didn't have an accident either). Sold it a while back, though. Pajero rear seat access beats out equivalent Prado. Older Nissans and Toyotas don't have the headrests either, but are forward-facing.

They bolt straight in. The factory mounts are there. Forward facing aren't practicle as said due to the short cargo area, in an accident the child will be thrown in to the back of the middle seat.
I do use mine, have to we have 4 kids and they are a hell of a lot safer than letting the kids sit on the floor!
My D1 started life as a 5 seater, then had to get the 2 dickie seats for it. Did the job myself,, dead easy, no inspection required (NSW), all done in one afternoon
As already stated, they don't come with headrests, can be a bit hard on little heads out in the bush,, but the excitement of going up and down and almost around,, seems to take away the initial pain
I've been lent a 98 Prado at the moment, it has forward facing seats,, with headrests. These can be removed and stored in the back of the seat.
in QLD to keep your insurance company and rego happy you have to have them "blue (mod) plated". this is to alter the compliance plate under the bonnet which states the seating capacity of the vehicle.
i did it many years ago on a econovan changed it from 2 to 5 seats even though i used an econovan seat that bolted straight in
