    broken valve spring

So I have found the cause of a noise that has developped over the last 3 months, and I sure am glad that I stopped driving after last weekends final increase: I had snapped a valve spring !!

What would be the way to go (- bought the head brand new 12 months ago)? just replacing the spring?
the guide is snapped and on all other exhaust valves they feel a little loose - coincidence?

A local shop recommended replacing all springs, re seating them and facing the head off : $600

whereas Paddocks sell a complete head with valves fitted for less than $500... (plus delivery of course) - but I need a few other things anyways: the old girl has done 450 000 km, and I feel like a major service is due!

Whats everyones thoughts on this please?

    Cheers in advance!

if you only did the head not that long ago I'd pull the head off, replace the valve springs and put it back on, with new gasket of course. You would of course check the head for damage but if its damage free I dont see any point having it faced unless its been run to hot.

If the head is serviceable you can replace the valve spring by holding the valve up with compressed air. Make up an adaptor out of an old spark plug. You will need to bend up a tool to depress the spring with the rocker arm shifted out of the way, perhaps removed altogether. I have taken valve springs off P76 engines tons of times, the LR head is a bit different with the rocker shaft.

    thanks for you replies, guys!

The head is off - its a 300tdi by the way - it hasnt overheated or anything - and the valves have been taken out by the shop.

I have never replaced valves myself and am just a little concerned about a few things:
why did the spring break in the first place -> dodgy springs? -> can any of the others fail on me as well?

So we replace them all, not such a big deal, but the shop mentioned that because all valves are a little loose that he needs to re seat them which would lift them up higher why in return he would recommend to face the head off....

    ??
    I'm not too sure!

well, I bought the head off rovacraft and installed it myself, so as far as I am concerned, yes it was a brand new head 12 months ago...

..... did it come complete with valves / ect .... fully assembled ... or all new, but had to assemble

.... or was it just a bare block, and you had to reuse the old valves / springs ?

    cheers

it came completely assembled with new valves, guides, springs - the lot.

Hence I'm a bit puzzled as to how this happened - but then again I replaced my waterpump due to a faulty pulley 4 times IN A ROW - so it wouldnt surprise me if I just got another lemon....

Under 12mths? I'd be making a claim if I were you. That's what warranty is for.

Just over 12mths? I'd be making a call to them anyway.
