Dry universal joints on the steering column?
John
Hey everyone!
I did a 4k klm drive to Darwin without so much as a blemish, and confirmed that I bought the right rig for the mission and beyond. Having said that, earlier tonight I had my first real drama with my Disco!
I'd had a couple of drinks which put me just over the limit, so did the right thing and let my best mate drive us home from a great evening out. The trusty Disco suddenly had its power steering go balls-up and he had to wrestle a heavy tank! I checked all I could in the dark with a torch and nothing seemed amiss, yet the problem remained.
We left it for a while and soon enough I was fine to drive to the supermarket, and mid-trip the power steering came good and hasn't failed since. The vehicle is mechanically A1 and is well looked after in every manner, so I'm wondering what the hell happened? There is nothing to suggest any electrical or fluid issues, no damage to any parts whatsoever, and I would really like to know if anyone has found this issue before, and what the remedies are!

sticking relief valve in the power steering pump.
a full flush of the powersteering is a good idea, the power steering fluid is one of the more neglected fluid levels during a service, right up there with brake fluid and the battery acid.

My '98 Disco was originally equiped with a non-ZF steering pump (may be it was "Huborn" branded), and this pump is known to fail making the pulley axle to go outside.
With 215.000km mine did this 1 month ago. When it failed, the steering was working sometimes and sometimes not.
You should check if the pump pulley is in correct allignment, or if multi-V-belt is working in the same place as usual.
I hope my spelling is understandable.
