High pitched whistle...only at low revs idle...???

I've had a look at some other threads about this same sort of thing but they're not exactly describing what I'm hearing...basically it's a high pitched whistle that you can hear (very loudly that is) when the car is stopped and at idle.

After driving lots so it's not just when it's cold, in fact I don't think it happens when it's cold.

If I stop at lights for example when the idle drops I will hear the whistle. If I hold the accelerator down slightly to up the revs just a bit it goes away. If I let go of the accelerator and let it go back to normal idle it comes back sometimes, but sometimes after giving it a little pump like that it doesn't come back until next time I stop.

This isn't just a little tiny noise it's pretty loud, I did notice that some people suggested power steering pumps...I think I have some kind of leak (well actually there are a few leaks haha) under the car which may be a little bit of power steering fluid (slightly red stuff) which is a very slow leak from a small fluid line towards the front of the car:

...so I'm not sure if this is power steering fluid that's coming out but I will check that. It still steers just fine and the noise doesn't happen when I steer or park in tight spots.

It doesn't seem to be affecting the drivability just yet but I'm hoping I'll get it before it does

Those hoes look like Gearbox cooler hoses. They go to behind the Grill ( Right?) and attach to a cylindrical transmission cooler with looped mesh on it.
The Power steering line is the one that runs across your photo and is clamper to the bottom of the support below the fan shrouding.
The hose probably needs replacing as the go at the union of the swag to hose.
Check you gearbox for low oil level, it could be the gearbox oil pump that's screaming?????

I'd second checking your box and xfer case oils. Dad recently had to replace a xfer case due to running on low oil. Sounded like a turbo whistling.

Probably not your issue, but worth checking out.

When I hear it it's a continuous whistle...then it goes away when I lift the revs.

I checked under the bonnet also, there are no birds under there

I wonder if you have a hole in your exhaust somewhere however I was thinking belt seeing as though noise disapears with revs which is often what belts will do, that's why I was trying to find out if you had perhaps described the noise wrong..

    Good luck

Okay I should have checked this already but I only did today...checked my power steering fluid reservoir and the thing is pretty much empty. Dammit

I'm going to go get some from a servo or anywhere because I've been driving it around like that for probably a couple of weeks now and that might have been the noise...I hope I haven't damaged anything.

    What engine, YA?

Champ, it'd help to know what sort of engine is whistling!

    A tdi? Probably psp.

A v8, you say? Where do you want to start? Belts/psp/vacuum hoses....
