As someone said earlier, if it is not too late, you must sort these cowboys out before they stitch someone else up, do you have access to a solicitor, if so get them to send off a strong letter in combination with advice from Fair Trading, Trading Standards we call them, this should get them moving, I also feel they should be named and shamed, these sort of "business people" should not be in business.

no naming and shaming on here thanks!!!

as for a solicitor they will advise you go to fair trading first.....as they say that it is is the cheaper option and often yields results..if not then go to a solicitor

do things in triplicate: 1 for you 1 for fair trading and one for the mechanic.
If you have a week to spare print all the info on both a4 one sheet b&w hand outs and A3 colour + photo bill boards(they have taken you for a $2000 false repair and reduced the value of the LR to zip whats another $50-100!) and camp across or just down the road from your helpful mech.. no cant call them that , rip of parts fitter, handing out flyers to any who go past.Make sure you dont go on their land, and have a video camera set up so if they approach / threaten you it's on tape and is admissable if you have a bold visible sign up "YOU ARE BEING FILMED"
Call the local paper's as it will make a great page filler on mon- thursday

If you paid by credit card and its not to late, stop payment by disputing it. Plastic money is fantastic like that and it puts YOU in the gun seat in that the repairer has to go you?

People make mistakes and hopefully your mechanic will come to the party.
He possibly has insurance cover for that sort of incidence.
It seems to be fairly common on the site for some reason. I think the internet has taken away some peoples manners. Think about it for a moment. If you were face to face with someone, would you say exactly what you write on here? In my case, as I watch what I say, the answer is yes, however for a few individuals, I can guarantee the answer is no, as you would probably lose teeth. You need to get off your high horse and re visit your application of social etiquette.

Yep, I'll second, third and fourth what everyone else has said. Don't let them get away with it. The end result was caused by their error.

They want you to throw your hands up in the air and get rid of it. If you do that they win and who else can they do that to? Fair trading for sure.

Is that site policy? I'd have assumed that most members would want others to name & shame bad businesses or individuals with whom they've had dealings.

If I had been ripped off by a mechanic, I'd certainly want to let forum members know ...

It is more to do with legal requirements. By naming a person or business in a forum such as this, you leave yourself & the site admin open for a lawsuit.

It's a pity that this is what it has come to, but the world is changing, and we have to change with it.

I've been a site admin in the past (on a site that has had an history of p*ssing people off) & I've never personally been bothered by the risk of lawsuits. From Defamation in Australia:

Truth (which is also called justification) is probably the best defence. Formerly in some states (such as NSW, Queensland, Tasmania and the ACT) truth was only a defence if you could prove that a ‘public interest’ was served by publishing the defamatory words. This requirement has been dropped from the Uniform Defamation Law and now there is a defence if the defendant can prove that the defamatory imputations are substantially true.

    ...

To use the defence of honest opinion you do not need to prove the truth of your comment. In some cases this is not possible, especially if it is an opinion rather than a fact. You only need to convince the judge or jury that your comments were your honestly-held opinion ...

Note that other Australian fora have no problems with the name & shame concept ... just do a search for Peter Stevens over on Netrider & you'll see what I mean

I think it's important that we can, as a community, speak our minds to our fellow enthusiasts. A timely warning about a dodgy mechanic might literally save lives.

the problem with naming and shaming is only one point of view is expressed and no matter how good a reply the other side gives there always remains a doubt in peoples minds.

someone with a vindictive trait and lacking the necessary balls to deal with a problem face to face can inflict a **** load of damage on nothing more than hearsay.

it takes about 8 minutes for anything said on here to be cached in google, yahoo and bing etc etc and once it is in there it will be there in some form or another, for digital eternity.

i have no interest in taking the risk (and i don't mean to me) posed by allowing such behavior as it goes against my idea of what natural justice is or should be...
