Bought Disco TDi from dealer, sunroof leaking

My wife and I just bought a '95 TDi 3-door from a dealer in Melbourne. Sitting in the car today I realised the sunroof is leaking. I spoke (politely) to the dealer, and they're getting someone to take a look at the leak on Tuesday.

A bit of Googling shows that this is a common problem on this model, which seems to be, at root, a design fault.

I'm quite happy to have leaks on my 40 year old Series 2 - that's what you expect from a vehicle of that age, esp. with a canvas top :-) But a low-kilometre car made in the 90s? Not impressed.

As much as I love Land Rovers, my first reaction is to return the car to the dealer for a refund. Any opinions or suggestions as to how to fix the problem for good? Maybe just seal the sunroof up and never use it?

The sad thing is I love everything about the Disco except the leak ...

    Is it a genuine sunroof?
Hardly any 3 door '95s had them as a factory fit.

First thing to normally check are the drains which can block up but this affects any sunroof.

Most European cars will have sunroofs produced by a couple of suppliers, notably Webasto.
To say one model has a problem therefore is inaccurate.
Most sunroof problems are from lack of maintenance and the most common problem is blocked drains .
This usually is pretty simple to fix , but you must remember the car you are buying is 15 years old and may have developed rust in the sunroof area as a result. Good luck with it.
If I were you I would have an upholsterer remove the headlining in the area to make sure that the surrounds are not rusted.

Thanks - I'll get it checked for corrosion when the mechanic takes a look at it on Tuesday. At least we picked up on it immediately, so the dealer is footing the bill not us.

W.r.t. originality, I believe that the vehicle is entirely standard. It was a pretty good buy, low kilometres, one owner, full service history, always garaged, etc.

May be the previous owner knew something, it can't leak if it's garaged

Car is over 15 years of age. Average life expectancy for a german sheppard.

i think for a car not to leak for that long regardless of manufacture is a miracle.

Mine has a sunny and no leak, its parked in shade mostly and under cover at night. The sun does evil things to rubber and plastic though.

I suggest take it back for them to fix and if happy with rest of car enjoy the things that work.

What they said.. Dealer to fix, and properly.

Cheers and congrats on what sounds to be a nice car.

Get the dealer to drop the price and fix it yourself, I had one with the same problem. My Fix, opened the sunroof and stood in car and using the hose forced water down the drain hole which was blocked at the bottom but inside the guard, blew out heaps of crap and never leaked again.

Thanks for all the suggestions & feedback. The Disco is back with the detailer today, they say they'll sort it out & have given us a loan car in the meantime. Quite happy with that.

Of course the proof of the pudding is in the testing. My plan is to thoroughly hose the car when we get it back, & search for leaks.

We've also booked her into Rover Land for a post-purchase inspection on Monday.

Dont worry the sun roof on my D3 also leaks. Haven't got around to clearing the drain tubes yet.
Another way of clearing the tubes is to use your 12v compressor, and with a ball inflation attachment and a bit of dried silicone over the end to create a seal, blow air down it.
