Is gas conversion worth it? Costings please!? + other stuff

    Hi

I recently acquired a 1994 D1 V8 auto and like many would like to reduce running costs if possible by fitting gas. I would like to run as dual fuel.

I might be able to pick up a used kit for $400 or so.. does that sound ok? (its a 2007 build cargo tank setup)
Is it worth 2nd hand and having it fitted?
Does anyone know what the usual cost iof fitment alone is?
Is there much/any of the process you can do yourself to reduce costs?

There's plenty of other thing that need attention... and I hope to get to them 1 by 1.

The usual door lock tabs fall inside the door too far.
The central locking only works on the passenger side rear door.
Not many lighhts work inside the dash to illuminate buttons at night.
the LHS headlight occasionally decides not to work
The RHS rear elec window does not work.
Afetr driving it for a while I think that the auto is not driving hard enuff at lower revs (torque converter??) - likes to rev a bit.

I took the console out today and found out just how broken it was by prior owner/s. Whats the best way to deal with this?

I'm also investigating the rust situation under the driver's seat...doesn't look to good... (i shoulda been here readin up BEFORE I bought!)

I'm definately a "learner" here so all and any help much appreciated!!

    Cheers
    Grassy

There is nothing wrong with a second hand gas system PROVIDING it is in good condition. It is going on a second hand car after all. Gas cars, even dual fuel MUST be tuned to be optimum on gas, otherwise you wil get loud bangs destroying your air cleaner, apart from woeful economy. So the first thing is to find an intelligent gas fitter, or learn how to do all your own tuning and servicing. Usual cost of fitting a second hand system is something like $600 to $1200 depending on what needs to be replaced/upgraded during fitting.

If a diesel gets 10l/100k and a V8 on LPG gets 18l/100k, work out what it costs to do 100k. Diesel near Brisbane is 129.9/l and LPG is 59.9/l. That works out to be $12.99 for the diesel and $10.78 for the LPG.

Interestingly a litre of LPG will add almost double the distance when burnt in a diesel enhancement system as compared to burning it in a V8. Pity you can't run a diesel on 100% LPG. Doesn't work! Only about 25%.
Diesels for distance, V8's for the rumble.

I just put my 94 discovery v8 on gas and I’m happy with it now.
I get 240kms around town and it only cost $33 to fill the tank and that’s on 33" mud tyres.
The one thing to be careful of is what bee utey said. "The first thing is to find an intelligent gas fitter"
I got Gas Power in Newcastle to do mine and I was very unhappy with the job.
To start with there was a list of thing to fix in the car after they had finished installing everything for the gas setup and when I told the boss about it all he said was "That it didn't sound right". That’s all.
And when I went back for it's 1500km tune up they stuffed the tune up so bad that the car would not even drive on gas and then told me it’s a problem with the disco and I should get it looked at elsewhere.
I took the car out that night and tuned it by ear, an hour later it runs sweet. I still want to get it retuned by someone that’s knows what his doing just to check my tune.

    All so read this http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-1/100337-disco-backfired-morning-gas-what-do-7.html

There is a list of things you should do before putting your disco on gas like leads, plugs, coil, and amp. I have done all of these and my disco has never backfired since I retuned it..
