But hey thats just my experience..
If I lived in the riverina where all the roads are flat I wouldnt have bothered, but the bigger tyres made the hilly terrain around lithgow and bathurst painful to drive.

what you always have to take into consideration when changing your tyre size is the gearing. If your going to go the 33 or 35" route then your going to have to invest in new gears to make things a little easier on your disco. And to bring your speedo back to where it should be. Don't go and do it half assed and expect it to work. If your willing to put up with it while you save for the new diff gears and you understand that Disco's will always have a high COG when u lift them and put bigger tyres on them then i say go for it. What i like and what Joe blogs next door likes is never going to be the same. It might work for me but for the next guy it could be a complete failure. One never can tell. Take the chance if your that way inclined and if it works tell everyone how much you love it. I know i will be when mines completed

I doubt that you will need the muddies up in the Kimberley. If the road is that wet it will be closed or impassable. 750 x 16 were plenty good and easily available.

But hey each to their own

some of the most awsome driving in australia is in the Kimberly and muddies are very common up there. All tyres places stock the common ones like BF etc. 35's are common as well. Also 750 x 16's are bloody horrible on a disco

Having said that there are still plenty 750 x 16's on troopy's and defenders but no-where near as common as say 10 to 15 years ago

thats what im saying.. if you read my post (IN MY DISCO) i have better driving now than i did b4.. it pulls harder up the hills with 32's than it did with 29's. i find it stays in the sweet spot on the rev range better and pulls harder... IN MY OPINION on my car the 235/85R16 is a perfect match tire for the car without being excessive and required other expensive changes along with them... and by hills i mean some big long hills too, not small ones.

Thanks Blitz the muddies are not just for mud either they give fantastic traction on rocky surfaces and have excellent protection against punctures trust me we've tried and tested them on my wifes jeep and they topped the list well above all terrains. Yes size is personal preference and as four stroke said the taller tyres seem to make his disco perform better than standard. Each to their own. The more of us that go out on a limb and try different things the more of us there is to pass on the valuable info to the next guy. I say dare to be different steer clear of the normal and enjoy it. maybe soon we can have a comparo get a few of us together at toolangi or anywhere else for that matter and see which set up performs best in what ever situation. try and find a standard disco then go up in mods as the tyres grow. would be a great way for all of us to select what set up we require for the trips we are planning and get the advice from those who have done them???? just an idea

i agree and if ya want sand Coffins bay in SA has stuff that nothing can climb not even bikes so we can sure as hell play there.

I'm running AT's - 275/70/16's simply because I got them at the right price, I am going to hunt around and probably get retreads with the most extreme chunky knobbly fat tyres I can shoe horn under her for play. The mud lark guys in Darwin mostly use the front tyres off of tractors on their rigs, so something similar but able to go a bit faster

just decided today that i dont have enough lift so going 1 more inch after i get new brake lines made up for it. That way with new front suspension arms i can get better articulation and still keep my 35's.

nice! just out of curiosity what mods did you have to do to fit your 35's? how far have you gone with yours?

i would like at least 33's on mine maybe even 35's... i have 300tdi. obvisously i will have to get flare kit and cut guards, diff gears, thinking maybe 2 inch body lift. i currently have 2 inch susp lift but springs are too soft so will be getting replaced anyway... what would you recommend?

    mods for mine so far.
2 1/2 inch suspension lift another inch in poly blocks coming soon
    2 inch body lift
wheel arch cut and flares coming asap cause the tyres are a waste sitting in my garage.
I have also fitted hitough axles and county cv's and fully rebuilt the brakes, swivel hubs and wheel bearings, the diff gearing will come along with lockers as soon as i can bring myself to sell my harley which it should be a week or 2 away from advertising.
But i am going the whole 9 yards which isn't for everyone. my budget is as i have it i will spend it for the good of the disco. I have an illness its called landrover where i caught it i dont know do i want to be cured of it HELL NO. BTW the body lift was probably the easiest mod i have done so far, If you have brains and a welder any alterations you need to make are very simple with some threaded rod some 1/8 steel plate and a grinder. And thats if your fussy
