    Brake Fade

    Hi all

This is my first post so please forgive any errors in etiquette.

I have a 1998 3.9ltr non ABS discovery in which the brakes were starting to fade, that is they would seem to take longer to come to a stop and no matter how hard I pushed on the pedal the wheels would not lock (they had locked previously)

So I figured - replace the master cylinder - this I did without mush hassle, and yes I purchased the genuine non ABS cylinder.

Ever since I installed the new master cylinder I have not been able to get any brake pressure, I have bled the brakes 5 or 6 times but the fluid just dribbles out of the nipples, there is no pressure.

Is there some trick that I do not know about?

    What am I doing wrong?

    Cheers

I had new rotors & pads replaced on my '95 D1 a couple of months ago & in heavy traffic last week I had to come to a quick stop & did, but only just.

Rang the Mobile Mechanic who did the job for some advice, me suspecting it was brake fade in the heavy peak hour traffic.

Long story short, he replaced the brake fluid which I admit hadn't been done for quite a few years.

He pressure fed it from bottom to top (?) & said the moisture in the old fluid had boiled off a bit & the resulting air had gathered in the 4 way valve thingy. Dunno, but it is now back to previous/normal & feels really good now.

    Hope this helps.

Your original trouble could be produced by a leaking servo diaphragm or by to loose wheel bearings, too.

your description matches that of a failing brake booster unit. the bleeding issue may be the brake pressure modulator giving you grief.

bleed all the lines in stages starting at the top of the MC if you cant gett a good bleed there then somehting is amiss between the fluid and the pedal.

Thanks for the suggestions, bled the master cylinder and then bled the brakes another 5 times - finally got pressure.
