    Front diff - Backlash Question

    Hi guys

The front diff in my 97 tdi has got some serious backlash happening so I'm contemplating rebuilding the front axle with an ARB locker.

ARB reccommend changing the carrier bearings, which makes sense, but is it likely that there is some crownwheel - pinion wear causing backlash and is it worth replacing them? or can this wear be compensated by using the backlash adjustment? (the vehicle has done 220,000ks)

also, people talk of busting axles with lockers. is it worth upgrading the axles if the vehicle is mainly used for touring? (the idea of getting a locker is so i can lay off the noise pedal in the rough stuff, rather than go further than i already do)

Any help or suggestions would be great

    Cheers
    Al

Play or movement in the front axle is usually a combination of wear in the diff gears, axle splines, cv's and drive flanges and to some degree backlash in the crownwheel/pinion. The backlash can be adjusted but the others are usually a replace job. Worth fitting stronger axles and cv's if using a locker/truetrac etc.

    thanks for that guys.
On the topic of cv's can anyone reccomend a replacement cv apart from the ashcroft ones? They would seriously blow the budget and are probably more than what I need at the moment
