CV in the D1,, clicking ??

G'day guy's/gal's, and before you say search,, I have,,,
In my 96 V8 D1 approx 300ks, I have a clicking noise coming from the right hand front wheel. I have searched everything and come up with "its the CV" ,, however, on removal, it seems to be ok. The clicking is in my opinion, is only light. I've checked over the CV, I can't find anything that looks even vaugly wrong, other than maybe it has too much endfloat type movement within the unit. (But there's nothing I can find to clarify this).
I have a second hand unit to replace it with for now, but it seems to have even more movement,, (and its supposedly a "good unit") On removal of mine, I did notice that it didn't have very much oil in it,,

So, can someone offer up some advise on this part, and also, if its not the CV, then what is it? Do I need to remove the diff and check that,, although the noise just does'nt sound that far under the car,,

Thanks in advance, and cheers, Chops

Give it a good clean and look in the groves at the end of where the "balls" run or the "balls" themselfs.
If it's only "light" the wear will only just be noticable.

    Plan B....Take the D2
    Cheers, Kyle

CV's will make more noise when turning into a corner on that side, try this out, if so only solution is replacement. Rob

"CV's click but they show no sign of wear"

.... I *think* I remember seeing some advise by 1 of the brains trust that you remove both CV's and install (swap) to opposite sides (LH swap to RH)

Maybe a PM to Justinc might prove fruitful

    Cheers

    Cheers guys,
I might try that Mike, I have read that too, its just I find it hard to fathom that there seems to be no visual damage to the unit that I can see. However, when I get the chance, hopefully Monday, I'll take it to someone who deals with them on a regular basis and see what they say.
Turning right certainly has more noise than left, although when it first happened, I was turning left, and it was quite loud, so much so, I stopped the car to see if something underneath had actually broken,,
And, all the grooves in the unit look good, (although I do wear glasses ), so the D2 is going to Albury this weekend,, its just a case of who's driving it,, we have to take two cars because Leeannes going up tonight, and she wants it,, and I leave Friday night or Sat morning,, The thought of driving her rice burner that far has me depressed,,,

    Cheers guys,,

And, all the grooves in the unit look good,

    I'm only guessing too
.... Might be like, the tolerances are great ... but, it might be the way the balls & groove has Bedded in over the years ... So swapping it over will change the position of the forces verses the position of the balls

Dave (Blknight) likes talking Hypothetical theories .....

Either that ... or you screwed some spider gears

What happens when you jack up all 4 wheels off the ground and start the motor / Put it in gear / Turn wheels ??

Yeah, I understand the logic behind the theory,, its been known to work well in certain circumstances,, we'll see how it goes..

I wait with anticipation,,, a very knowledgable guy,,

If I'm taking out the other side, (which I think I will have to), then I might just pull out the diff and have it checked out too,,

I have'nt done that,, I only have two stands, and am in a rented house, so very few tools here,, still, if all goes right in the next couple of weeks, it'll see me with a workshop and all my tools to check things out thourally (s?),,
Having bought the D2, the plan is to fix up the D1,, beef it up a bit, rebuild the motor and gearbox at my leisure, add a few bits, like diff lock/s, 1" body lift, and generally have a good solid play car thats reliable.
Its really the first time in about 12 years that anything major has gone wrong with her,, and I treat her like crap,, So now she gets a good overhall,,

    WELCOME to my world ...

Dont know about your world Mike,,, but with glasses, I hate mine,, I'm going to invest in one of those magnifying lights soon,, you know, the sort you bolt onto the bench and they have a light in them,, there excellent, I use one at work every now and then,,

    Cheers

    Thanks Mike,,
