    I would be disappointed if a D1 or RR Classic 3.9 litre RV8 is not producing 70 KW (power) / 3000 N (tractive effort @ say 50 - 80 klm/hr) in 2nd gear WOT at the wheels.

A Haltech / piggyback that remaps the advance curve and alters the fuel map (but can’t alter injector duty cycle) should produce up to 85KW or 15% improvement. However (inc of dyno time) the cost is probably approaching $1,500. This is a lot to outlay compared to vehicle value.

Alternatively may I suggest the following EFFECTIVE & LOW COST steps to power boost a Rover V8.

    1. After checking/establishing TDC simply increasing initial advance to 10° BTDC (and check your vacuum advance while you’re at it). That should produce say 5KW or 75 KW total. That costs nothing /$0 or if you need the gear not much… ..LOL… Message - AULRO Classifieds

    2. Next remap distributer so ignition advance is “all in” by 3,000 RPM or close to when max torque is produced. That should generate another 5%+ more power or say 80 KW total. Cost say $200 either as a DYI (re-spring or say using Jaycar/Silicon Chip piggyback) or re-sprung by a Lucas dizzy specialist.

So for outlaying a few hundred dollars you are probably only 5% short of what a Haltech or other piggyback setup will deliver.

    3. Finally the stock 14CUX fuel map in the D1 is much better than everyone makes out and so further HP gains are nominal with a new fuel map (say Tornado etc). However that said changes to injector duty cycle (that a piggyback can’t do) and some other extras like increased idle speed, engine braking etc do make the engine far more driveable and easier on the engine. Expect to see 5%+ or say 85 KW total with a new fuel map. That will cost around $600.00 + or so.

I stress the above numbers are a guide only and are dependant on the health and tune of the engine to start with.
