    roof lining issue

    Hi guys,
I have a 95 DIsco ES which has previously had a video screen fitted behind the front sunroof. The roof lining will not stay up t the rear of the sunroof (that is to say the flexible sunroof surround will not hold the roof up).

    I have 2 questions:
    1. Can I remove the screen and if so what can I replace it with as obviously I don't want to leave a gaping hole.
    2. Is there anyway to fasten the roof lining back up?

    Cheers

Dress making pins, use pins to pierce the fibreglass backing board. this will hold it from driopping on your head. I did this and it lasted for years. The only proper way is remove the lining and spend a couple of hundred $ and get a motor trimmer to re fabric. Do a search, covered many times before. some remove and just paint their roofs.( if you like that sort of thing) the fabrics foam backing discintegrates,(spelling) and even glue will not hold it for too long.

Are you talking about the fabric coming away from the shell or the shell itself coming down?

If it's the fabric, it means that the foam backing to the fabric has perished. It is a common problem and will continue to get worse until the fabric is removed and replaced.

Garrycol's advice of drawing pins is a temporary fix, but what ever you do, don't try to glue it. The glue will adhere to the shell but make unsightly lumps with the dead foam and will make the eventual re-fabric fix more difficult.

The shell itself is coming down so I can see the metal roof through the gap. I cannot remove it as there are sunrooves which have all the wiring etc...

Not sure of the construction of the Disco 1 shells, but the RRc shells were made out of compressed cotton waste which eventually sagged like you are suggesting in your Disco.

What I did with my RRc shell was to remove it from the vehicle. Build a wooden frame a little taller than the original shape of the roof shell so that the shell would sit upside down inside the frame and the shell lips could be held by some clamps onto the frame. With the shell outside the frame right side up, I then liberally brushed clear Estapol lacquer all over the exterior of the shell so that it soaked through the outside lining and into the cotton waste. When it was completely covered I then turned the shell over and secured it into the frame and placed weights on top of pieces of cardboard (to prevent imprinting the shell with the shape of the weight) so that the centre of the shell went back into its original shape (or even a little taller than it's original shape). When it was dry I did a second coat of Estapol the same as the first.

The result was that the estapol made the outer layers of the cotton waste go hard, restoring the original shape and strength of the shell, without diminishing all of the sound deadening qualities of the shell. I then had the lining fabric replaced by a motor trimmer.

It may be a solution for your problem.
