Red face NEW to all of this

Hi all after looking at all the threads on disco 1 i am wondering which model would be best I think i am going to go with a late model tdi but am a bit confused as to what the interior should look like ive looked at a number of disco's some have air bags some do not Ie 97 manual no airbag no abs which i thought was wrong and 96 with airbag and abs. Not sure what the different models came with ie se, es, s, etc can anybody help. Also which is more reliable manual or auto

I've a '97 300TDi manual D1 and that definitely has airbags & ABS. Probably the 'pov' models made do without!

You'll start a religous argument over Manual/Auto. Do a bit of a search here and you'll turn up a number of threads.

    Welcome to the forum BTW.

My wife has a '96 Disco 1, and that has airbags/abs. I won't get into the man v's auto debate either lol. 300TDi motor seems to have a better rep than the 200. But after saying that, the Disco is sitting out the front with a blown motor! lol. Faulty temp gauge caused that I think...

    you forgot V8's v diesels

if you want to play hard dont get air bags, if you going to "travel" the diesel arguably is better, max economy is the manual

I own a 94 V8 auto and love it for all it's faults

Just to confuse the issue more again, my 98 tdi auto Disco has a single drivers airbag (no passenger side) and no abs!

    Cheers

To confuse it further, my 98 V8 "S" D1 auto has no airbag, no ABS.

I personally like the auto, just because I am a lazy bugger.

    Welcome to the forum MMEJ

Both airbags were optional on this model, so some have them some don't. Mine has both drivers and passengers.

If you are going to go around hitting trees and other vehicles at speed get one with airbags otherwise it doesn't really matter.

Interiorwise I believe there were 2 colours, grey (gray?) and a sandy/fawn/light brown colour. Then there was the option of leather on the up-spec model.

I have a v8 auto. Not so good on fuel economy as I tend to have a heavy foot but the auto is great because it gets motoring pretty quick. Previously I had the manual diesel, excellent economy, good engine braking when off road due to the manual and higher compression of the diesel. Engine braking on the V8 auto is not too bad as you can manually shift the stick into a lower gear and still get engine braking. Saying this it is still not as good as the diesel.

At the end of the day Auto vs Manual, v8 vs diesel, airbag vs non-airbag is all your choice and preference. Drive them all and see what you like.

Oh, and don't forget the 5 seat vs 7 seater debate.

I was reliably informed the 300Tdi with an auto was the only way to get it off the line without using a calender--

however, there are LOTS out there,,

Hey, I have a 95 v8 auto ES which has both airbags and abs.

Not sure about diesel vs petrol but I love the noise of my v8. On the auto vs manual argument, my mechanic told the the auto was much kinder on the transmission than the manual but otherwise it depends if you're a control freak like my father in law who won't drive an auto as "it changes F'ing gear at the wrong time, bloody auto box piece of ..."

    Other than that...
