I don't suppose a 97 Jackaroo TD 3.1 Isuzu motor would bolt into my S1 Disco tdi?
Regards, Erik
Well, that motor I think is an Izuzu engine.... so the chances of it actually fitting are quite high.
This should be the engine that you are talking about
4JG2 3.1 L
My guess that the ease of the conversion would depend on whether or not the bell housing from the other Izuzu engine would fit the 4J
They tend to have conversion kits for engines like these in the UK.
None I know of in OZ.
Google is your friend.

The 4B is a different engine to the 4J,
this is the web site that you want
Engine Conversion Kits For Land Rovers, Range Rovers & Toyota MK Models - Range Rover Engine Conversion Kits (Manual Gearbox)
and here is the information that you really need
MCK 14
Isuzu 4JB1/4JG2 (2.8Y, 3.1T)
340.00.
This is for a "Range Rover" but I dont see why you couldn't use it in a S1 Disco. They also sell kits to mate it up to the ZF auto.. sweet deal
The 3.1 is a 4JG2(T). It is in the same family as the 2.8 (4JB1(T)) from the rodeo and the 4JA1 (2.5L) used in industrial applications and rodeos and jackaroo equivalents OS (and a few imports).
They are supposed to be quite an easy swap into a landie. I have seen a few Rangies in AU with the 2.8 and 3.1 fitted. They go quite well.
I plan to put a 4JB1T into my IIA some time in the future. I personally would not use the 3.1 as they are indirect injection. In Isuzu motors the 2 seems to normally denote an IDI engine and the 1 a DI engine. The rodeo and jackaroo 2.8s and truck/industrial variants have timing gears!![]()
- the imports have a timing belt - so you may want to avoid them. Not sure on the 3.1.
This place also sells kits: Land Rover conversions - M&D Engineering
EDIT - here is a thread I posted a while back on the 4J engine family:

Thanks for the info. Still pondering...The disco head is defintely soft and teh bores are scratched, so it looks like a bit of an expensive overheating experiencing.
Erik
of the options out there, i would advise againt the 4JX1, the damn things are starting to become problematic, some parts are becoming VERY hard to source, and wreckers want $8k-$10k for the damn things.....
Hi Erik, i faced this problem in December 2008, i didnt consider a Jackeroo engine, swapping the current diesel for another diesel wasnt an option but i did seriously consider a 5L Injected V8 conversion.
In the end it was xmas and Marks Adaptors were closed for like a fortnight and i needed the car done and running before my wedding at the end of january. In the end I went with getting a new 300Tdi engine. Engine conversions might swap in realtively easy but you will have a few head aches along the way getting things to mate up and engineering the slight differences out.
Bruce davis did me up a short motor for $2400 and then did my head for $1200. I was in a rush so couldnt hunt around much but fortunately bruce looked after me anyway.
With the aussie dollar the way it is at the moment getting rebuild parts from the UK will be cheaper then when i did stuff. In the end I got:
1- Reco short motor- $2400 (thats old block, and machined crank with new everthing else)
2- Reco'd my cylinder head: machined and tested head, new valves the works.
3- New timing kit, fitted and set up by bruce so all i had to do was bolt the motor in
4- new oil pump
5- new injectors
6- new glow plugs
7- machined fly wheel (i recently did the clutch without knowing you had to machine the flywheel so it was getting really bad clutch shudder)
8- new heavy duty clutch
plus other minor odds and ends.
Total cost was about $6000.
Was more expensive than a v8 conversion, i could of had a complete VS SS that was wrecking for about 4k and then had all the bits, but in the end 1- i couldnt wait and 2- replacing the Tdi meant i knew it would bolt straight in without the head aches of this and that not quite fitting.
With the exchange rate and not having to do as much as I ended up doing you would get away cheaper than i did. Alot of auxillary stuff needed replacing on mine due to it being sunk in mud to often (which is why I dont plough through bog holes anymore).

Thanks Matt,
That is helpful info. I am aware of the cheaper heads etc in Europe, but postage is quite expensive and I haven't had any firms reply back to my emails.
Do you or anyone else have favourite suppliers from Europe? That would at least give me a starting point.
Thanks, Erik
