It started with a knock
I had a knock develop in my Disco Tdi last week and took it to the mechanic and he found an issue with the crankshaft pulley and keyway. The bolt had come loose and it appeared as if the keyway had come loose and had worn a groove inside the pulley.
No problem so far - we ordered a new bolt, washer, seal, pulley and keyway. When it arrived though the keyway was completely different. This is where the fun begins. It seems as though the previous owner has modified the keyway, bolt and crank somehow- for what purpose I am not sure. It all seems a bit odd to me, obviously there was a previous issue and they have gone to great lengths to bodgy it up so that it was running.
My mechanic thinks it will need a new crank and possibly more. My mechanic is unable to do the job so we have been in contact with Coffs Harbour 4wd who are landy specialists and I have always found them helpful. There is talk of a complete engine rebuild obviously depending on what they find.
My mechanic bodgied it up again and got the engine running, now without a knock, but I am not game to drive it far in case it all lets go. I am just lucky that it lasted as long as it did as I have just got back from a 3 week trip out to Mungo NP.
I am not happy and still a little confused as to what they have actually done and why. Any ideas why?
