While you have the door apart it is worth checking the window winder rollers - I replaced all of mine at the same time,

I have recently replaced the spring in my father's D1 tailgate. Exactly the same problem.
The removal of the lock is fiddly but not too hard. Make sure you take note of where all the linkages go, otherwise might be a bit difficult to get back together. (the instructions that came with the spring were very good, however it is still a fiddly job).
I made sure I also purchased new door liner plugs, and it was a good idea because most of the existing ones broke when removing the lining.
It is a lot of work for one tiny little spring. I think LR mechanics would charge a fortune to do it for you because it is so fiddly.
Good luck with it.
Cheers,
Matt.
