Unfortunately, Diesel engines have no manifold vacuum, a vac pump provides brake booster signal.

ok after talking to a few people who are deisel fitters and work around motors for a living they've told me that its the timing thats out as it hasn't had one done thought that this would be a quick and cheap fix if it is.

What i would like to know is how hard is it to change a timing belt and reset if its slipped?

ok so the latest in the list of things done to this vehicle.

    1. Timing belt serviced and new kit put into the Donk.
    2. New fuel filter; found about a teaspoon of rust in filter.
    3. Cleaned and serviced the water trap at the back of vehicle.
    4. pulled the injectors to see where smoke could be coming from if there was water in the injectors which injector 1 and 4 had some around them when pulled.
    5. dropped oil to check that there wasn't any water in the oil from a hole in the head.

Next question is where do i go from here. The timing is spot on as i was told it wouldn't run if it was out even slightly out. anyway it now running a bit better still not right the smoke has gotten darker could it be that its a lack of fuel from the injectors being fowled or whats your thoughts.

Oh they will run with the timing out, trust me on that one. My trusty 300tdi Disco went through 2 rockers, 1 push rod, and 1 rocker shaft, plus numerous trips on the back of a flat bed. One of the culprits was the timing being out by 1 tooth.

Was talking to a mate of mine and he said that it might be that the head needs a new gasket highly unlikely that it would have done a head or block as its done enough miles to be bedded in by now (400K+) and if there was a problem with it having an air pocket in the head from casting it would have shown by now......
Whats your thoughts just need ideas just in case my mates wrong..

400k km's and no head gasket?

From what I have read, I would say its a head gasket or even a cracked head.

Thats a lot of miles under its bellie.

New head with all gaskets and valves from Turner engineering in UK costs $1000 delivered to your door.

In AUS you shouldnt be paying more than $150 for injectors for a Tdi.

I agree though with above. I'd be taking the head off and getting it checked. If the head is good whack a new gasket and injectors in.
