That fuel sediment bowl looked like Chucaros one, just before we ended up overhauling the fuel pump and replacing the injectors

It makes me mad to see such a result of lack of maintenance.

One thing about diesels, clean fuel or Death to the fuel system

    Justinc,
is there any order that theese bolts are to come off the head in. Mate said that he thought that there was. I'm waiting on the Rave disc to turn up.

No order especially, but it is best practice to remove them in reverse order of fitment.
Just remember that the rearmost 2 bolts will not come out due to the bulkhead being in the way. They need to be slid into the head holes and tied off with an elastic band on reassembly, too.

I learnt that the hard way aswell. I didnt know it was there. I maintained the car thoroughly but wasnt aware of the sediment trap. End result, dead injector pump. Not happy jan. Clean it out every 6 months or so now.

400k km's. Get head checked for hardness and if needed get 5-7thou shaved.

I would also do rings and bearings at very least depending on how how bores are. Once this far even go slightly over size and just bite the bullet and get new parts from Turners in UK.
place 2 orders if have to in order to get below the $1k mark for tax purposes.

If cooling system is not great, no point in doing anything unless you get that perfect IMHO.

    Nice project.

Agreed about "Nice Project". For mine, a set of pistons and rings, big ends and main bearings, reco radiator, off with the auxiliary mounting and do the p gasket. All the bits from Turners in UK.

Easiest to do the job with the engine out. Check the bores for a very light hone - perhaps with a "pineapple". Do the valve guide seals while the head is being checked/machined.

What's the rest of the vehicle like?

    And good luck.

So ok guys i have had the head done and got all the parts to put the motor back together still waiting on a couple of the cooling parts.

I have a quick question i have gotten the head and the parts quicker then expected and i have no manual on how to torque the head down. Just wanting to know i no its a paint in the arse but i would like to get the pattern in which and the description to do the process. I have ordered a manual but it will take time and i very rarely get a chance to work on the old girl and would like to take the chance whilei have it. Very much appreciatted.

    Regards Chris
