    Tipping point

    HI all

What is the tipping point for a standard D1? I just want to know so I don't exceed it.

If we told you, how would you know??? Get out & measure with a protractor??

There are soooooo many factors which affect the point at which a vehicle will tip over:

    • Loading (Roofrack, fuel, etc...)
    • A shifting load (recovery gear shifting from one side to another)
    • Vehicle dynamics (The faster you drive, the more the body shell 'wobbles')
    • Terrain (Tree root on the high side or a hole on the low side)
    • Etc...

The limiting factor is usually your own comfort zone as most people **** themselves at 30deg but there's more to go...

I don't know what the actual figure is (almost certainly well beyond where it scares the daylights out of you!) but you need to be aware that it is not safe to approach anywhere near this maximum angle in real life, as anywhere close to it, all you need is to turn slightly or hit a bump to move the resultant vector from the combination of gravity and acceleration enough to exceed the tipping angle.

Consider, for example if driving on a side slope close to this angle - and you need to turn uphill. The vector sum of centrifugal force from the turn and gravity will be such as to bring you closer to the angle - if moving even dead slow, this will move the angle by a surprising amount. Same sort of problem if you hit a bump on an uphill wheel or a hole with a downhill wheel.

the tipping point of a D1 - is the point at which it lays on it's side and has a little rest.

As stated above there is an almost infinite amount of variables to take into consideration.

on hard ground going slowly in low ratio most people back off before the vehicle reaches rollover point - i actually have no idea I just go by the seat of me bum - but it is probably somewhere around the 40 degrees mark

Many years ago I was told that as long as you stay in the seat you will be OK. The tipping point, as said previously, is a lot further than you would feel comfortable with. I remember many years ago doing a u turn up a bank in a Series III LWB, I was convinced it was going to tip over but it didn't.

My iPhone has an app on it which tells me lean angles.

I understand there are many variables, but I would have thought there would be a baseline that one could operate from. i.e. a standard D1 on hard ground stationary with a full tank of fuel and no passengers, or something like that.

for up to max nominal load correctly distributed (including the factory roof rack at its correct max load and distributuion you are good for 60/40 slopings

sorry I hadnt come across this thread earlier, theres a real simple way to calculate this using your iphone

    1. put vehicle on flat ground and make sure the iphone is reading level
    2. take vehicle off road and find the nastiest side incline you can
    3. drive along it until your D1 falls over and has a little rest
    4. as its tipping, take your pen and paper and calmly write down the angle
    5. get out of your vehicle, usually by the passenger window or sunroof
    6. empty your shorts
    7. open cold drink, probably something fairly stiff
    8. subtract 1 degree from the number you wrote down whilst filling your pants
    9. and get back to us so we know that that number is

    cheers and good luck
