Let me just say I would love a V8 disco, what I wouldn't love about it would be the fuel consumption, the rego, the insurance, the servicing (plugs, leads, oils & filters)

I have a 97 tdi300 auto disco & I love it, not the fastest thing around but its a hell of a lot faster than some other 4 cyl diesel 4x4's on the road
I've done numerous trips out to western Queensland as I'm a avid Bow hunter in my spare time. When you can consider doing 1400-1500km round trip towing a fully loaded camper trailer plus a couple of days to work the following week and it costing about $150 in fuel......you can't beat it

I'm a very proud diesel disco owner.

    Hahaha touche...great line that one

I'm still at odds with what to do...I really want increased touring range as the only real reason I got a 4WD is so I'd be able to take it on decent trips places and have it be reliable. The range thing is a big draw card for me, plus people tend to sell kitted up diesels more so than V8's, and there is a nice looking white one on carsales at the moment.

A diesel is always going to be a bit more reliable in remote rough areas isn't it? That's my take on it anyway. A few people have made it sound like the V8 is a very reliable engine too if taken care of....hmmm decisions decisions

I still reckon the best combination is the late 80's or early 90's RRC with a 300 TDi conversion. Bloke I know (on the forum) has just got his on the road, and it drives very well. I test drove it after the d-gas went on and it's no slouch. They are lighter and more touring friendly than the D1. And they look classier.

300tdi is the way to go for touring. bought mine for that purpose, no engine mods or anything. used it to tow a boat round oz, including the cape, the kimberly, tanami and just about everywhere else. never missed a beat and average around 650km per standard tank (fully loaded roof rack and towing boat). would love a v8 but the diesel just seems more practical for doing serious adventures.
