    I have a V8...but I think I want a TDi...am I crazy???

I have my lovely manual blue V8 and I feel like I'm fairly on top of it in the way that I know it's got a couple of issues and I wouldn't take it on a long trip before having it looked at properly, also it's on gas with two scuba tanks and gets alright mileage although I've only got a 30ltr petrol tank so it's range isn't exactly "touring" range.

I'm just wondering if I spend the time and money making it into a serious 4WD for taking on serious trips or if I should just sell and grab a really nice TDi that's already been kitted out for some serious off road action. That and the whole "mileage" thing of a TDi seems a lot better than the V8's...but I do like the torque of the V8, it pulls pretty well!

I know this has been discussed at length and I've done my searches, just thought I'd throw it out there again for the hell of it

or just grab a tdi300 and bolt it in the rave manual even tells you whats needed to do it.

an no, your not crazy its a perfectly sane line of reasoning, especially seeing that if you tweak up a tdi300 it can perform as well as an early v8

I had a 4L V8 in a 93 Disco and it was awesome on and off road, it had a 135 long range fuel tank and it needed it. It got to the point where I couldn't afford to drive the V8. My Son and I drove up to Dave's place in his 94 TDi 300 Auto Disco, we drove with a full tank of diesel from Moruya on the South coast of NSW to the Gold Coast in Qld. on the full tank (90l I think plus a couple in the filler neck).
My only gripe is that you need to plan 2 weeks ahead to overtake, it's not that bad but you get the drift, I can now afford to drive the diesel Disco anywhere, anytime without having to worry about fuel consumption, go for the diesel, Regards Frank.

I have had 8 V8's from the 3.5L to full on 4.6L with all the fruit and now a 300tdi.
The tdi is tweakes and has D-Gas fitted and goes very well and has been superbly looked after by another member on here.

I totally agree with what you are saying, the V8 is good and relatively cheap on gas but for touring, the diesel has it over the Petrol.

Also, in the outback there is basically no gas and that really limits your choice.
A good tdi is not that is easy to come by, services are more frequent and rebuild can and will cost a bomb.

I suggest you drive some, if you were closer I let you drive mine and see what you think, they are not hoon cars thats for sure.

May-be another member thats closer to you or a test drive of a car in the Yard or preivate seller will soon tell you if its for you.
Otherwise a long range tank will be needed and you work out the cost of fuel on touring versus the purchase of a new/different car.
Alternatively, fitting a 300 tdi into your car but that will require $10k and some cuts and bruising.
A friend is doing one currently and has done so for 6 months now.

    Either way, good luck.

Cost for a really good tdi is between $7-14k in my opinion and experience.
Just depending on what extras are fitted.

Diesel 300TDi, 130 ltr long range tank, 20 ltr LPG enhancement, then you can expect 1500km on a tankful if you are careful. Tweak it and it will have plenty of poke. Just be patient to find the right vehicle, don't rush into it.

I have a 5 speed manual 300Tdi and love it. Yeah it doesnt scream up steep hills at 110 but i dont have an issue overtaking.

I have had the bruce davis injector pump tweek and that makes a difference.

i am considering swapping my unreliable v8 for a diesel in the future also, that or a 350 chev, but im leaning more towards the simplicity of a diesel engine

Well I'd definitely go a diesel over a 350 chev hahaha surely that would introduce a lot of other complications into the whole situation

I've read on a few threads that the diesels can actually be tweaked to run pretty hard...it affects the economy but not a huge amount if I remember right.
