Would you consider mating it up to a GM Gen3/4 V8? These motors are plentiful and cheap, the biggest issue with rovers is finding a suitable (read bullet proof) transmission or gearbox for the conversion.
Rover boxes are too weak, ZF's cost far to much to beef up (keep hearing in the region of $8000). GM 4L60e is borderline in strength (can be beefed up at a reasonable cost though), but the disadvantgage with these is their length. Boxes like the 4L80e and NV4500, while much better suited, are not that common in Aus, and good condition ones cost $$$ (then issue of spares as well). No one makes the conversion for the GQ to LT230 any more. See the problem![]()
