    300TDI timing

when i put the recoed IP the timing pin was tight in the hole and to one side so i decided this week to get under and visually check the flywheeel slot in relation to the IP hole as per the rave manual. well it was out as i had thought by about half a tooth (smidgen) so i corrected it (clockwise) the rave way and it was all good with the flywheel locked in position the pin easily went in and out of the hole whereas before it wouldn't.
started the disco and it was very hard to start plus it wouldn't run right (missing like air had gotton in to the system) and making lots of smoke, grey smoke bugger.
if you try to rev to clear it, it then starts to backfire? me thinks i might have retarded it
    what do the sages think?????
oh i have just readjusted the vavle clearences as well

Was the crank on TDC #1, did you line up the timing marks, did you loosen the 3 bolts in the IP gear, Regards Frank.

yes, yes and yes all per the rave manual
which says to put the pin in the IP without the crank pin inserted, loosen the 3 bolts on the IP pulley and then turn crank until slot lines up, insert crank pin tool and then tighten the 3 bolts on the IP pulley making sure the IP pin slides freely in and out.
only thing i didn't do is rotate the crank and double check the marks.
i will be doing that this morning if the liquid sunshine stays light

There is a possibility the IP pin may be inserted either side of the actual hole in the front of the pump housing. It can happen so that will mean excessively out timing, even worse than before which seems like what has happened. The best way to ensure the pin actually goes into the IP timing hole is to look from above the pump, the IP hole is at 12 oclock on the pump body, which is about 10:30 when viewed from the front of the timing case, if this makes sense
Basically, when the timing pin is IN, you will not be able to rotate the engine either direction at all, if it isn't in the pin hole, you can get more rotating one direction than the other and the timing pin will rock aswell.

yep i did this and yes it was in the right hole as i used a small mirror to see if i had indeed done it right.
rechecked everything this morning and found that because i didn't do the 2 revolution of the crank check that the timing was WAAYYY out (advanced) so back to resetting it again and this time i did the 2 revolution check and it is now firing on all 4 cylinders
