Dying headlight switch.
Fit a loom with arelay so the light switch does not carry any load.
All the specialists sell them as I am sure does Drivesafe.

Did some more testing on the courtesy light problem today and it looks like I get consistently 1-1.5V less at the lights compared to say the front cigarette lighter....Any ideas what could cause this? I cleaned both the ground connections for the courtesy light and the battery today, but no change. I also put a ground cable directly from the light assembly to the chassis. Didn't make any difference...

Thanks for your reply Philip.
Please excuse my ignorance, but could you please explain how the headlight switch comes into play? Shouldn't the courtesy light function independently of the headlight switch? Also as far as I can tell from the wiring diagram, they are on different circuits. Would be great if you could elaborate a bit more. Thanks!
Re door locks, try sticking the key into the left door key hole and turning it.It should unlock only that door only. If this fails, post a picture of your partner so we can see what the problem is.

If you don't like trucks, stop buying stuff.
Hi Discoowner.
Sounds like you are getting on top of things.
Might be an idea to trace the wiring you have in the engine bay that is not standard and remove what is not running anything. If the wiring was used for something else but is no longer required get rid of it. Dodgy wiring is the cause of many vehicle fires and all it does is clutter up the engine bay and make diagnostics harder.
Once you have all that sorted then you can trace the wiring that is causing issues and repair the sections that may need work done.
It wasnt a mistake buying a disco, mine has provided years of trouble free motoring, many people blame the car when more often that not with a vehicle that age the problems are caused by poor maintanance or a complete lack there of.
You'll get there mate, I have learnt to do pretty much everything on my disco by asking questions on here.
PS. Photos are a good idea, it is a massive help when you post pics of a problem, helps you get a more direct answer.
I think your lighting issue is a bad earth as many have said. Get a simple $5 test lamp from bunnings and earth that and then touch the power wire and see if it lights up, if that lights up then all is good. Then maybe organise an alternative earth wire to that one that is there and see if that makes a difference. It it works with an alternative earth wire then its the earth, trace the wire back to where its bolted to the body and clean the terminal and bolt back on.
As for you central locking issue, thats how they are, mine is the same. It is possible to purchase an aftermarket alarm system and have that fitted, system only costs $200 with the door actuators and then the whole system should work off the button. My door actuators are buggered, only the drivers side works now, the rest need to be pulled up by hand. The after market actuators bolt straight in and most people replace the original ones with these as they fit right in and a kit with the after market ones in is cheaper then a factory one and work just aswell. Plus you have an alarm now.

It doesn't .Please excuse my ignorance, but could you please explain how the headlight switch comes into play?
It must have been late at night and when I saw voltage drop I read head for courtesy.

To try to redeem myself , I just had a look at the RRC diagram.
Should yours have a time delay unit like a RRC? ie the lights go off after a minute or so.
If so I would suspect the time delay relay.
The other suspect would be the fuse that feeds the interior lights in the RRC fuse B2. Replace the fuse that feeds them with a new one in case the fuse has a bad contact

Question: Have you checked the bulbs by using two wires direct from a 12 volt source. The battery. See if they light up.
If they light up ok. I would run an independant earth wire direct to light and insert bulbs into light and earth it with the wire. If you have 12 volts on one end, and a good earth they should light up. If they dont get back to us.
Also feel free to pm me your phone number and i will explain what i mean if your unsure. If you have not got one get a cheap test light as they are easy to use.![]()
Once again thanks for the many suggestions.
@ V8Ian:
That works exactly as you describe, i.e. if I unlock from the passenger's side, it only unlocks that door. So I guess you're unlucky, no picture of my better half.I'll probably go with Ace's recommendation and get the $200 after-market system at some stage. Seems like a good investment to me.
@ Ace:
I certainly hope I'm getting on top of things, thank you. It's starting to look good. I have now removed one solenoid that wasn't connected to anything. With the other bits I think I leave them for the moment, because they all seem to be hooked up to something somehow. I am a bit concerned with some of the thin cables though, they have no insulating conduit and come pretty close to the engine. I hope it doesn't get to hot and they melt. I will start tracing the dome light wiring on the weekend, when I have a bit more time and then report back. So far I certainly don't regret buying the disco. It's going strong and I'm learning a lot.
No, unfortunately the interior light doesn't work of the ignition so far.
Regarding the interior light, I think I have eliminated the bad earth as a potential source, since I ran a separate earth directly to the chassis with no success. I've also disconnected, cleaned and connected the connections.
The $200 after-market kit is an excellent suggestion and will solve my running around the car problem. Thanks!
@ PhilipA:
No need to redeem yourself. Any help is appreciated! I think (i.e. by no means certain) in my disco, the delay should be controlled by the multifunction unit (MFU). I have replaced that fuse (#12 in main fuse box) but to no avail.
@ Bazzle218:
Yes, I've connected the lamp to both, an external 12V source and directly to the car battery, in both cases it lit up. I then ran a separate ground cable to the chassis as you describe and connected the other end of the bulb to the cable coming out of the roof (the one showing 12V on my voltmeter) and it didn't light up. I think I understood your description and I think I have all the required test equipment, i.e. bulbs, cables, voltmeter. I just don't have any luck![]()
