    DREADED LINER FAILURE REPAIR

    G'day All,
I have a '96 V8i that I thought was underpowered when I bought it recently, then coming home from work one day I heard and felt a 'pop' or 'clunk' in the engine, after which it dropped to seven cylinders under load or cruise. Idle seems unaffected

My local LR specialist was convinced problem was cam and lifter related, and found a collapsed lifter so replaced all of them as well as cam & timing chain, as the cam was [expectedly]very worn. He called me today and said the noise was still there and so is the miss.

He is going to do a compression test tomorrow, and said that might show a low compression that would point to a slipped liner, which might also explain the noise. Engine has fair service history, with 260K on the odo. I only paid $3K which is cheap I realise, but motor was running fine when I bought it and for several thousand kays after.

Given your combined experience what do you guys think?

    What is a 'pinned' liner?

My problem is I need to pay to have this work done as I'm not able to do the physical work myself due to injuries.

    Thanks for any feedback.

Slipped liners generally run fine except for water transfer in/out of the cylinder. So I would discount that. There are other possibilities which should show up in a compression test. It could be a stuck or bent valve from the lifter fault.

That is worst case .... But it would most probably be accompanied with coolant loss and maybe pressure build up in the radiator

A more plausible ... As Bee utey says, Loss of compression can happen via stuck / bent valves ....

or better yet, a valve that punched a hole through the piston .... But that is also another extreme, of worst case

As the topic is slipped liners - how can you tell if there is a slipped liner when the engine is not in the vehicle and still has the heads on.

I bought a 97/98 3.9 some time back very cheaply. The PO said that it had a slipped liner but had not actually investigated it. He said that the engine ran OK but made a rattling sound at idle. He said it was not sticky lifter type noise.

Is a slipped liner obvious if the sump was removed - looking at the liners from the bottom of the engine??

    Thanks

I would imagine if you twisted the Crank L & R ... you might see a sleeve move, as the piston rings have a grip on it

Can you seal up the coolant outlets and pressurise the water side up

having not long ago brought a D1 and done a motor swap due to a slipped liner.

Motor run fine ( after every thing else was sorted), power ok for what it is. no water loss, no pressurizing of the radiator. every thing seemed fine except the knocking.

Fine when cold but appeared about the same time as the thermostat opened.

pop off the head the head gasket may be damaged from the liner hitting it

I agree, if the liner moves it will do it when hot. I saw a loose liner engine a few years ago, and the top of the offending liner was shiny unlike all the others. It happened to be no. 8 cylinder on a P76 and I could kill the noise for a few seconds by introducing a little cold water via the brake vacuum hose.

Sorry when I saw "liner failure" I thought...

and despite Clive Cussler's best efforts there's no reparing that !

    /back on topic
