had both, 300 tdi manual and auto.

auto leaves the manual for dead. on boost faster and much better off road, more so on sand.

Wow I honestly didn't think there would be so much preference for an auto 4wd. For some reason I thought manual was a better thing to have in difficult driving situations so you could have a bit more control over things but it sounds like everyone is very happy with the autos. Is this a general thing for discos or particularly with the TDi's?

In general with cars I prefer a manual because I think I just like driving them more, I do see your points though.

When i was buying my first car i was set on it had to be a Land Rover obviously... and i was set on the idea that it had to be a Manual!

But now after driving it for 4 years... i find myself wishing it was an Auto! mostly due to the amount of time i spend in traffic! and of course all of the other mentioned advantages... the only other advantage i think there is for the manual is that 1st is lower then 1st in the Autos...

+1. If I had my druthers (and I don't) I would rather have an auto V8. Auto's change up and down with no loss of speed and so are excellent for sand hill climbing.

I did the same thing a couple of years ago, sold my 95 ES which I loved but couldn't afford to keep on the road and bought a 98 Tdi.
My 98 Tdi is not perfect by any means but there's no ABS no SRS and no three amigos. so it suites me.
Just for interest what was the amount of changeover that you had to pay , including taxes/duties etc for the Tdi?
    Regards Philip A

I went from auto V8 to auto TDI and the tdi is way faster and just alround easier to drive, i can outrun modded turbo patrol utes from the lights and surprise a few dunnydores as well - most cars dont expect to be dragged off by a diesel 4wd .

Actually they are probably thinking "look at that nutter thinking we are drag racing when I'm just gently driving off" :-)
