300tdi turbo or turbo pipe problem
I was planning to ring up and order a suspension lift kit on Monday so something had to stuff up .......
Over the weekend my 97 Disco has become REALLY slow of the mark and blows a heap of smoke under load.
I've only owned it since Christmas, but it was a one owner, properly serviced, always garaged, 120,000 k's, excellent cond overall.
After reading a heap of stuff on here about turbo hoses, I checked mine, and have a few questions:
1 The elbow from the turbo, and the short bit into the intercooler look in good nick on the outside but are very soft if squeezed.
How hard should they be ?
2 There has been a few drops of oil coming from where the elbow hose joins the turbo, the clamp was loose, tightened it up and the local Landy "experts" said the oil was normal
It IS an airflow issue, the top tube from the intercooler collapses in on its self when the engine is revved.
So, Turbo problem or can one short pipe elbow starve the engine that badly ??
Can anyone recommend a good local mechanic that knows Landys ?
I have had it to two local mechanics that were recommended to me, a few weeks ago when the smoking started (no loss of power though), I won't be going back to the first one , the second bloke seems better ......
It was literally only driven to the shops by the owner's wife for a long while before I got it, and blew only a TINY puff of black smoke, hot or cold start at that stage.
The first weekend I owned it, I did 300k's on the highway, and noticed halfway through that I could now hear the turbo at over 2000 rpm, couldn't before that. From then on it smoked a little bit on startup, but went well and got better than 10 litres/100klm the only time I checked.
I took it to local mechanic #1 to get it checked out and ask about the smoke - no worries I was told, they all do it.
How about the turbo hose? I asked - the mech squeezes it and says it's fine, they're all like that, but your head gasket's leaking oil at the back of number 4, that'll be $2k to fix thanks.
NOT HAPPY, took it home, when it cooled down I put my hand behind the back of the head - no oil ...... so I went looking for a second opinion.
Took it to mechanic #2, a diesel shop, who supposedly "knew" Landys.
They checked oil for water, water for oil, gasses etc and said there wasn't a problem, but didn't seem to know what I was on about when I mentioned the turbo hose being soft, and had a bit of a laugh about Land Rovers always smoking a lot .....
So turning to AULRO for direction, any advice greatly appreciated.
Tim
Edit to add: If the hose has de-laminated, will the iit have clagged up the intercooler, or is it just a case of fitting new hoses ?

Reason: Edit: intercooler question

Mine never smoked but changing to silicone hoses stopped them collapsing and together with upgraded intercooler, made a big difference. Well noticeable anyhow.

Hello mate. The elbow hose went on mine. Looked fine from the outside but when i took it off you could see the de-laminated inside layer. The de-laminated inner would inflate under turbo pressure and block all air and cut the engine out. It does feel soft when it delaminates but hard to describe how soft.
First thing i would do if i was you would be to whip it out and have a look. Very quick to do and cheap to fix. Swap both hose while your at it. Also worth buying a spare to pop under the seat.

Thanks Guys.
By the time I finished posting , the engine had cooled so I went out for a closer look.
I pulled the elbow off, and couldn't feel anything obvious inside it.
Put it back together and moved if further onto the turbo and metal pipe before I tightened it up.
Started it up and idled for a few minutes, blipped the throttle and there was no deformation of the top hose.
Took it for a drive, turbo noise is barely there, and there was no problem at all until I'd done a few k's, then things slowly started to get sluggish and smokey.
The temp gauge had reached normal temp (1/3 of the way up, never gets higher) way before the problems started.
Came home, lifted the bonnet and even a small blip caused the top hose to deform.
Driving home the turbo didn't start to make a difference until over 3000 revs, normally you can feel it just over 2000.
Could a weak top hose be the problem - I've only been able to find info on dodgy bottom hoses ?

try the small hose on the bottom of the intercooler, this one on mine was delaminated whereas the bent one wasn't.

Ordered a Silicone hose set from MR Automotive today, hopefully that'll do it.
My only worry is that it is only doing it when the Disco has been driven a few k's and warmed right up - the hoses would heat up straight away wouldn't they ?
The top hose is collapsing right in on its self, so the loss of flow is severe.
Is there anything else that could be happening - maybe a crack somewhere (intercooler?) opening up when it gets hot, or something like that.

Fixed !!
My Disco's well again ......
Got a silicone hose set from MR Automotive (great service, quick delivery) and set about replacing the old ones this arvo.
Took the top hose off - perfect inside ........
Took the elbow off the turbo - perfect inside ..... Hmmmmmmm
Took the bottom intercooler hose off and -

Wonder why it wasn't breathing properly ....
