I would not be to concerned about the earth wire as it's attached to a great big hunk of steel. So as long as the engine has sufficient earthing it should be fine. Having said that you can never have to many earths on a D1. Earthing issues are a common problem.

Not sure about the Diesel model but the V8 has a starter relay behing the drivers kick panel that could cause problems. I also had a battery lead that went high resistance under load. Have you tried running jumper leads directly to the starter from the battery.
    Cheers, David.

I had starter issues when the earth strap was bad, can't be any better if you don't have one - unless someone has installed one directly to the block elsewhere. I replaced the earth strap from the starter to chassis with a new one from SuperCp (decent prices for the blue ones) and noticed immediate benefits - less cranking as the starter motor seemed more efficient. And upon the advice of the more experienced on this forum, I also installed an earth from the negative of the battery directly to the block - one of the M8's on the front of the timing cover. I get immediate starts these days - when I bought the car it would crank slowly for ages before it fired up.
