cut floor of discovery to remove transfer case?

i'm wrecking a '92 discovery and need to get the transfer case out of it, like most old disco's out there the body isn't worth much so i will eventually be cutting it all up and taking it to the scrap yard, whatever i can't sell somewhat quckly that is..

anyway, i was thinking how in classic range rovers the floor unbolts and the gearbox/transfer case can be removed from the top using an engine crane or similar through one of the doors, so i thought i would cut the floor out of the discovery and access the transfer case that way

has anyone done this before? i figured it would be quicker than taking the body off to get to the chassis

and before anyone suggests it, i have been on my back under the disco for gearbox/transfer reasons too many times before, and it isn't on concrete on the moment so i am not even considering doing it from underneath

You can remove the console and drill out the rivets around the gear lever to give you access for an engine crane to lower the gearbox and transfer to the ground. I guess you could cut the tunnel out and go up but would be just as much work.

I pulled my engine, auto and Transfer out in one piece with an engine crane out through the front. To make it easier you could just cut the bit out where the bonnet latch is. I didn't do that though and still got the lot out.
    Cheers, David.

Cut the front end out and drag it all out in one piece.

If the body's scrap, how about tipping the car on it's side?
We did a clutch on our old HK Kingswood paddock basher that way

cut out the body mounts, remove the brake pipes fomr the MC undo the ac lines, the steering shaft from the steering box then winch the body off over backwards.

do it just right and the body will flip off of the vehicle and land in the trailer thats waiting to take it to the scrappies.

if you're going to do this take the time to strip off the ally panels and the doors complete and put them up here as complete units (in one case I got more for a private sale one ally panel than you get for the whole body) you should also strip the harness and rubbish out of it if you want max recycle value You dont get any less for the basic light scrap steel value but you're throwing money away.

To get it on a 6x4,

    remove the bonnet
undo the brake lines (mc and flex lines)
remove the ally skins from the front wings
    remove the fuel lines
    remove the steering column
smack a line into the roof with a large sledgie or the back of an axe
use a come-a-long (or tirfor or winch) to crush the fold in the roof so the roof is only 4 foot across)
remove the body mounts but leave the bolts for the rearmost ones in place (these are your hinge)
poition the trailer about 90cms off of the back bumper of the disco and square
extend the winch line from the back over the roof and into the front of the disco, secure it to the radiator area
jack up the body about 30cms at firewall position (I use a highlift and a some spare rims on the chassis as chocks)
Winch it up and over (the front will compress, this is normal)

when its landed in the trailero

wrap the winch line round the whole body back onto itself and winch in (I use a snatch block) it'll crush down to the size you need for legality.
as a minimum if Im trashing a disco I save
    • the elecrical relays + mounts (including the glow plug timer and the Voltage sensing relay (takes less than 5 minutes to get them all if you cut the harness
    • The main body lights
    • The steering wheel
    • the glove box + instruments + surround
    • The AC condensor
    • The Radiator+ intercooler
    • the fuel filter head
    • The Fuel Water Seperator unit

IF I've got more time to spare on the project I'll get (in approximate order
    • The doors
    • the glass
    • the seats
    • The Pedal Assemblies
    • the whole dash
    • The AC/Heater unit
    • the harness (without cutting it up)
and once the bodies come off
    • The fuel lines
    • The brake lines
    • The fuel tank

Flip the chassis upside down and strip off the suspension.
