No idea but interested to know what you find as I want to do same
Hi Folks,
After a rather expensive transmission rebuild I thought i'd investigate fitting a temp gauge to keep an eye on transmission fluid temp. I have seen a post regarding fitting a VDO gauge but unsure where to place the sender and if a suitable sender unit could replace the sump plug as that would seem the logical place to monitor the fluid temps. Anyone had any success with fitting a gauge to a D1 auto?
Cheers

I'm just about to do the same thing, my mind was set on an engine watchdog TM2 for my TDI auto as I've just rigged 1 up in the cab for the engine temp.
My Madman EMS has a sensor in the ATF plug
I had one from AEM Electronics - Wideband O2 UEGO, Water/Methanol, Stand Alone Engine Management, Piggyback F/IC, Tru Boost Controller, Gauges, Automotive Performance Electronics in my old car and never missed a beat.
That combined with a good transmission cooler made it great for towing and kept the temperature down below the upper operating temps.
When you start seeing it at upper temps even though it is within operating temperature you have your eyes glued to the guage and not to the road.
What is the "normal operating range" of the auto's? looked at the AEM gauges and they run up to 300c, I thought that auto's ran hotter than that.
Not wanting to question since I asked but 212f is 100c and that seems very low.
The Ashcrofts UK website states;
175-200° F= Normal pan oil temperature operating range.
275° F= Maximum allowable oil pan temperature for short durations during long hill climbs.
ATF lifespan drops significantly though when running at higher temps.
