    overheating 300tdi

My 300tdi Disco has had a painful overheating problem that has been going on for about 8 months now. It never overheats while 4wding or cruising around town, would only do it when on the highway sitting on 100-110. First off we had the radiator and all the cooling jackets flushed and there was no flow problems-all good. Still overheating! So next we replaced the water pump which was getting a bit tired, but still overheating! Tried 3 different thermostats but still problem is there! One saturday afternoon we were looking at the front of the vehicle and decided to take the front grill out of, thought perhaps this was restricting airflow. the disco runs an ARB steel bullbar, and bugga me dead, i can't overheat it anymore! I've had the grill out of for 2 weeks now and i've tried everything i can to get it hot but the overheating problem now seems like a thing of the past! Very stoked, still can't belive that it was something so simple, now i just have to make new grill that isn't so restictive and still looks good. Has anyone else had this problem??? cheers - adam

You said you flushed the radiator, have you had it out and properly rodded and cleaned? A flush doesn't really get rid of all the little blockages and crap.

Its inexpensive, and the 300tdi rad isn't really up to hot weather and hard work unless its in top condition, just removing a grill and that makes such a difference makes me think you're cooling system isn't fully up to scratch.

I've towed a 3 ton, 40 ft trailer in the middle of summer with a 300tdi disco for over 1000km with standard cooling system in good condition, with a bullbar and standard grill. If the cooling system is properly functioning, it shouldn't need a grill removed.

I got TJB winch bar and spotties but cooling system is in top notch form.

Towed many loads but guess never 3 ton but never ever overheated.

I also checked thermo fans, standard fan and get new thermostat every time I get radiator looked at. Every 2 years, that way overheating will be a blockage or brakeage as far as I am concerned in my case.

Sounds like your cooling system is not up to scratch. All other discos get around with the grill on

    300 over heating

Hi As the owner of 300 TDI in a 130 Crew cab, we had a sever overheating problem when the expansion tank craked.
The dissapointing thing with this was that when we ordered a new one the supplier said "O yes there is a modifyied one as the old ones crack!!"
Would have been great if Land Rover advised original owners to beware of this problem or offer to replace them before a major problem.

Yep, the black one is a beauty for cracking, that is well known and so are the pastic plugs on top of radiator and motor.

hey, yeah i had the radiator sent away to radiators plus, and all properly done and the guy who did it said it was all fine. he owns a disco himself and knows them inside out, so no probs there. Used proper Caterpillar gear (bro works at william Adams)to flush out the cooling jackets myself and a bit of crap came out but not much. the thing that had us stumped for so long is that it has never used a drop of water. So no head problems, pressure tested the system and it's all good. I am running 35's so its far from standard, althought the diff ratios have been brought back to 4:11. thought maybe the extra strain of tyres and all the other gear was to much for it, but yes, i have seen discos towing very large boats and caravans so i am assuming that they aren't having the troubles i am. thermo fan is also working fine........grrrr....the bonnet hinges are getting worn out

If your making your own grille check out overkills post on modifying the front grill. They made a Saudi Grille for the D1 in the middle east to cope with the hot conditions, i saw one for sale on UK ebay the other day but they didn't ship overseas otherwise I would have bought it

    he's in tassie,

    how hot can it get?

it probably needs a proper radiator clean out, or new rad,
    tassie doesn't get hot.

Live in the tropics (Darwin) and tow a Pop top caravan 1200kg) every now and then. most of the time the air temp is above 30-32 degrees sometimes 35-39. Have an ARB bar with Rallye 4000 Driving lights in front of the Radiator and have no problems with cooling. Haven't had the radiator out for rodding and the car is over 12yrs old. Regular flushing and changing of the fluids helps. Also helps that I am the only owner since new.
