    AK47?

    Hi guys and gals,

I have a '94/95 V8 with 160k on the clock. When accelerating up a hill ie. engine under load, I have a noise like an machine gun from the engine. I recently had an issue (45 deg days) where the engine would stall when idling. I have been told that these are probably linked and the dizzy needs "retarding".

    Is this correct?

    Cheers for any advice.

    Phil

The machine gun noise mite be broken engine mounts. (fan hitting the radiator surround) To check put a block of timber on a jack and jack the sump up and you will see if there had it or not.

Apparently, it's me being a cheap arse and using E10. Told to either use berthed fuel or an additive! Damn it

So is it a ping then?? I would have thought that this would of had a higher octane?

It would take a LOT of advance to make a 3.9 ping as they are 8.13:1 compression ratio and would almost run on Kero.

It possible could ping if the entire engine were carboned up from slow town running and the fix in this case is an "Italian Tune up" where you take the car for a long drive on a fast hilly road and accelerate hard up hill etc.

If you cannot decide whether it is pinging try a tank of 98 and add some injector cleaner and see if the noise goes away.

Maybe someone has gone berserk with the advance trying to get economy, so you should also have the timing checked by a mechanic.

It could also be a number of other things eg blown exhaust gaskets, engine mount as said by another poster.

    Thanks guys,

Had h pink slip done the other day and then took it on a longish run to the hunter. Filled up with 98 after mech recommended it and have already run 2 lots of injector cleaner through. Seems better but have noticed engine mounts seem buttered. How easy to change? Do I need engine block out etc...?

    Cheers

engine moust are easy just a bit fiddly, you just need a jack really and very small fingers

do yourself a favor though, when you get the mounts cut off about 10mm from each end of the bolts with a grinder.

    Cheers hangover,

Any ideas if there are pics or vid around to show me where to place the jack etc... And if I need a wooden block across?

    Cheers,

hmmm i dont know of any, it was years ago when I done mine, I seem to remember jacking on the actual engine mount bracket, it was a while ago though, can;t exactly remember.
I do however remember it took a bloody long time, until I trimmed the bolts try it frist though, see what you think.

I think I slackened both sides right off, then jacked one side swapped the mount, then the other. Like i said was a long time ago.
