Thread: Oil query

Hi all,

A mate borrowed my disco to tow a boat today and he noticed the oil was low so he kindly topped it up. The oil he used was shell helix hx3 which states it is suitable for carbs but no mention about fuel inj.

Should I be worried as I know very little about oils.

If you are talking a Disco V8, and you don't normally use full synthetic oil then any oil that is SL/CF4 rated should be ok, and most oils available today other than the "no namers" are, your mate only topped up the oil so we are not talking a lot anyway, you could confidently expect no problems from his considerate act, though mixing of oil brands/grades etc is not normally recommended.
I always carry a spare litre of the engine oil thats used in my vehicle with me for unexpected top ups that negates the possibility of having to use just whatever is available in the event that I find the engine down on oil a bit.
