Hi, i have just been down this path, I replaced my very worn 245/75's AT with 265/70 AT, there is very little difference in the gearing,(Google for a tyre size calculator and you will see), and I run 235/85MT's for off road. You will have to do the 'Camel Cut' which is no drama really, I havent bothered with stays or things, I don't believe that you need too.

It surprises alot of other drivers where tall and skinny will get you compared with much wider tyres, I reckon it all comes down to ground pressure.

    Regards,
    Jack

yes ideally i wanted the 235/85 for that very reason, that you can get double surface area on the sand when you let em right down..but was reluctant to do the camel cut as wanted to keep it standard on the body.
thanks for your input..too many bloody choices..!!

well if you dont do the camel cut the tyres will do it for you!.. when I mentioned adding 10%, I was referring to range. The change in tyres from the original 235/70 16 up to a 265/75 is about 10%. So off road you are really getting closer to 550km.. With my 265s on I get about 800km out of a tank combined cycle

I run 225/75/16 on my 95 300tdi disco, still get 870kmm out of a tank combined driving, well actually since moving to the pilbra, its more like 80% offroad and 20% on road, plus the aircond is on almost constantly. went for a two hour 4wd explore today and after putting my tyres through absolute hell ( both today and over the last 6 months, beach sand, sharp large rocks, awesome pilbra red mud) have nothing but the highest of praise for cooper st tyres 225/75/16 LT

Just following on, if you already have a 50mm lift on a 95 Disco, what size do you think is best:

    235/70/16 standard
    245/70 or 75/16
    235/85/16

    or something else?

    235/70/16 standard - no
    245/70 or 75/16 - maybe
    235/85/16 - best

    235 for best results
