    98' Disco

    Gday Aulroer's

I'm new on the forum as I just purchased my first Landrover, a 98' Disco 300TDi. Due to the circumstances (ebay) I have taken the sellers word for the condition of the car and therefore I have not seen it in person. My question is:

What are the things to look/check for on a second hand 300TDi apart from fundamentals like coolant, oil, brakes, tyres, suspension etc?

    Any info is appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Scott

Welcome to our world, and a good entry choice for a 4WD, a quite capable one at that.

Use the "Search" button on the Control Panel to look for the advice you seek. There is plenty to find.

    Good luck

    Welcome Scott
I've had a 97 Disco from new and its been a real love hate relationship ; )
If I was buying a used one the things I would be looking for based on my experience and research on the forum would be the following.

    Rust around Alpine windows (roof)
Rust in the floor pan (lift carpet) especially if its got a sunroof.
Timing belt kit - There have been mods to stop the belt wondering off the pulleys. Also good idea to replace the belt if you don't know when it was last done.
If an Auto ask if the fluid and filter have been replaced and when.
Cooler lines from transmission and oil cooler are prone to leak and i have replaced at least once.
Brake vacumm pump can leaks oil but can be diy fixed.
Remove oil filler when running and check for back pressure which can indicate worn piston rings etc.
how manys K's has it done?

    Cheers

    what discomark said
250K mileage i would strongly suggest head gasket (happened to me as a new disco owner)
300K rumoured big end problems, easily checked with a mechanical oil pressure gauge
radiator needs to be absolutely clean inside and out
**must have an engine monitor for the head**

    Gday Mark,

It has 176000 k's on the clock. Not too bad for a 98. Thanks for all the info, will come in handy.

And it originally came from out west of Charter's, I'm buying it off a bloke at Gympie and it has no sunroof so I will be very surprised if it is a rust bucket.

Upgrading from an 80' Datsun Stanza to 98 Disco. It is basically a new car in my eyes! ha

Thats unreal, sounds like the Isuzu diesels/Rovers the army boys use. Some of them have some big k's on the clock.
