    Blown Hose

    Hi everyone,
This is my first post after lurking on the site for about a year.

So to begin, about 18 months ago i bought a '97 300tdi Disco to drive to Mt Isa from Northern NSW and tow a trailer. All was going well until i got to the Toowoomba Range. The trailer was about 2.5t and the drive up till then was fine, abit slow, but not bad.

About 5m up the hill something happened, my power vanished, i was driving 20km/h in first gear!! Being overtaken by semi-trailers was pretty humiliating. There was also a sound almost like a pressure hose flapping around under the bonnet.

I had to pull over, so the first flat part i came to luckily had a rest area, i got out opened the bonnet and checked all the hoses, they were fine, i even got under the car with a torch and had a look, nothing. Started it back up it sounded alright, the temp was good not overheating.

I waited till the road was clear and headed off again, first gear 3000rpm all good, changed to 2nd gear dropped to 1200rpm and again zero power. I had to finish the hill in 1st gear going 20km/h. I got through it finally and thankfully the rest of the drive was fine, i put it down to having a heavy trailer and a 2.5lt tdi.

After reading here about intercooler hose de-glazing i thought maybe that's it, no visible damage, hence the mid-hill all clear. So i ordered a set of silicon hoses, got them yesterday and put them on today, top hose was fine probably didn't need replacing, same with the elbow hose, a bit thin in parts but useable. then the little bloody hose right down the bottom, took a bit of colourful coaxing to come off but i got it. First thing i did was look through the thing only to find that no, it hadn't de-glazed.

Then i thought maybe it's a small hole in the side

After close inspection of one side (it was stuffed but no holes) i turned it over......

    Well there's you problem.

I can't believe i drove around with this for 12 months, took it for a drive after fitting the new hoses, holy mackerel, it's like a totally different car. I normally have the air-con on seeing as though Mt Isa isn't exactly an Arctic wonderland and there is actual power when taking off, my 0-60km/h time is down from 25secs to about 15. Brilliant best $150 i ever spent.

    Welcome alexi.

Nice find! Can't believe you went a year with no power!

Now you know what it would be like driving the Tdi with no turbo; bloody horrible!
