    What is it called?

    Hi all! I'm baaaaaaack!!

Good news is that the old 99 3.9l V8i is still going...........just! The stop leak in december worked a treat and lasted nearly 6 months, small sign of an external leak on the head gasket so we'll run the stop leak through again and see if it clears up.

Now on to todays numpty question.......

When you open the bonnet there is a button type thing on the passenger side edge that goes up (and I'm assuming down again when the bonnet closes) and it has wires coming out underneath it.

What is it and what does it do?

    Cheers
    Danni

It's the bonnet switch for the alarm.

I'm sure you can work out what it does now .

    Hi DMO71,
My turn for a numpty question, why do you rely on Stop Leak to fix the head problem? The stop leak will eventually clog up all the other smaller cores like the radiator and the heater core. Stop leak is more of an emergency solution than normal maintenance, whatever has caused the leak will only be getting worse, eventually the failure could be worse than stop leak can fix and no doubt it will be at the most inopportune moment.
All meant in the nicest way, just asking the question.

    That's ok - I don't mind you asking!

It's a simple answer actually. Money - or to be more precise - lack of it!
I'm a single mum of 3 (2 of which aren't even my own) and this is the car I was left with. It's in a bad way and basically I only work during school hours because of the kids needs and that doesn't earn enough to do what has to be done.

It's a shame really, I really love this stupid car. But it's old and wasn't looked after before I got it. It's just a case of trying to keep it going for a few more months till I can afford to either fix it properly or get something else.

    Hi there,
Right, right now I feel really good, sorry about that. Understand completely, thanks for answering the way you did. Understand the "I really love this stupid car" comment.
Might sound a bit radical but maybe keep your eye out for a second hand motor on one of the local auction sites, sometimes the cost of doing a straight forward engine swap can work out cheaper than possibly taking out and refurbishing your old motor. If the engine has internal corrosion, repairing the old engine could be quite costly. People who deal in Land Rovers tend to be a fairly good bunch, I've never been ripped off intentionally by another owner.
If you find a well maintained engine, based on service records and klms you can sometimes pick up a bargain. All you need then is a family friend to do the swap.
Never, never, never, never, never give up. Good on ya.

do up the old engine if u can. so many hassles with some govts when u change the engine number. maybe, if u haven't already, fit an engine watchdog temp alarm. that way, if it does go u can switch off before it gets too hot. they cost $125 approx and u can fit them yourself and plug into the cig lighter. i bought two and they are very reliable. it is so easy to miss a rising temp gauge. the bloke who sells them is in brisbane over near archerfield.

    Well I'm sold.

if you can find yourself a set of head gaskets and replacement bolts, assuming the gasket failure isnt caused by block softening allowing the bolts to pull out, I'll change the gaskets for you FOC. I'll even do it as a call out.

My days been just that good.
