Question Tyre Comparo - experience advice please

    Hey Guys and Girls,

I'm in the market for some new tyres and have narrowed it down to 3 contenders as a couple of AT and a less aggressive MT. Size will either be 245/70/R16 or 245/75/R16 depending on availability.

The tyres i'm looking at are
    Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac
    Yokahama Geolander AT-S
    Maxxis MT-753 Bravo Series

Just looking for some recent experience by people with these tyres good and bad. unless someone has another tyre to throw into the mix. I've done lots of reading but lets say after a few glasses of wine confusion sets in and info blurrs

    Cheers

    Mark

I have only had experience with the Geo and although no issues were had, they were only really good on road and no chop at all on anything unsealed.

As far as size goes, I suggest go narrow and high unless you are doing mainly sand/beach driving.
Its quieter, smoother, less wear and tear on all steering componets and light to drive plus its what they were like from factory.
I advise the higher profile for slightly better clearance without scrubbing.

As an alternative altough noton your list the Pirelli Scorpions, BFG's and my favourite the Coopers ATR's LT's.

Thats from my 20 year experience, if we could still get the Michelins XMC's that be my 1st choice.

    Good luck.

    Hi Markus,
I've just put Bridgestone Duellers on the new 694 AT pattern, 8 ply I got a good deal so I took it.
BFG's, A/T's in my opinion you can't go past them, personal experience I would rather have a flat BFG than a new Cooper, wrecked two brand new ones on the GCR, for whatever reason, I abused the BFG's in a similar fashion, no problem at all, I'm over Coopers, I tried the warranty approach but I hadn't had a wheel alignment done by a recognised Cooper agent, not that alignment was the problem mind you. (sorry bigguy, this is my experience). I recently had some 4 rib Mickey T's, these were great, I sold the vehicle before I got much off road use out of them. I had a set of BFG MT's on a Rangie brilliant, a bit noisy.
I had a set of Maxxis 750's on a P38, great on the h'way not so flash off road, good on sand though.
I don't have any personal experience with the Geolander or the Yokohama, so no comment. Michelins, my experince, good tyre, hard wearing, never had an AT tyre though.
My ten cents worth, again all my opinions and experience others may vary as you can see.

    Cheers guys,

yeah Bridgestones were also on the short list a may still get a look in depending on the price of the others. Also read and heard plenty about Coopers and for the price I'm not prepared to risk them. Plenty of good reports on the BFG's but I'd throught I'd try something a bit different. I'd say my driving is made up (at this time) of 85% tarmac as a daily commuter and 15% off road being beach highland tracks light mud and snow.

I guess at the end of the day price will have a part to play as well.

I also have the Bridgestone 694ATs. They have proven to be good tyes. The set has been on for 18 months and have travelled 25k with even wear.

85% tarmac daily commuter and the rest mostly sand/light mud i.e. Fraser, Stradbroke, Moreton etc. No problems so far even at Christmas this year when the inland tracks of Fraser were like mud-soup. They are also quiet and comfortable on the road.

I have just bought 694's for the defender. Previously had them on my Patrol and very happy with them. The maxxis are good value for money though, they seem to get a reasonable wrap from those that have them particularly if you're not seeing a whole heap of mud.
