    Dangers of Loose Bushings?

    Hi,

Over the past couple of months I have been getting work done on my Discovery before I head off on a trip to the Kimberley. Essential replacements, such as the timing belt, have all been done.

My concern lies with the light knocking noise coming from the front driver's side of the car. It feels as though it's right under the accelerator. I have spent some time looking around the web and have come to the conclusion it's a worn bushing around the front axle, suspension, or sway bar. I'm at the point where I've spent enough money fixing the essentials, is there any real need to get these little things replaced? I believe they are labour-intensive too.

I am hoping I can worry about them after I get back from an 11,000km trip, including the Gibb River Road. Can anyone offer an opinion on whether I should be fine or if the bushings will lead to costly repairs down the line?

    Thanks!

Check the bolts holding the front axle to the suspension locating arms, they can come loose. 24mm ring spanners and both feet for force required to tighten. Otherwise look for rubber falling out of a bush and fix accordingly.

It's not a big job to change the bushes on the front radius arms if that is the problem. You just need to know someone with a press to push in the new bushes (unless you go for Poly bushes). You can get the old bushes out by burning away the rubber and cutting the rest with a hacksaw. As bee utey said check the nuts holding the radius arms to the body.

Knocking in that region could also be broken / cracked body mounts.

Take it to your mechanic or suspension specialist, put it up in the air and locate the problem. Whatever it is, and whatever it costs here, it will be cheap compared to a failure in the Kimberly, and that is apart from the inconvenience to your holiday.

Worn bushes on the bottom end of the front shock absorbers?
The old Maxim, "If it's made of rubber, it's suspect" holds true.

Anything to do with the suspension system is an essential! Get them changed if at all suspect,

    Cheers Charlie
