    Gearbox temp

Hi guys tomorrow I am going to Jaycar to buy me one of these

Thermometer Module with Alarm - Jaycar Electronics

The reason being that I am getting a bit fed up with the tranmission temp light coming on.
Today it came on while the car was stationery idling and did not go off till I was on the motorway. Ambient temp low teens and gearbox easily hand touchable. Even after towing a heavy car trailer empty and with a mates TR6 on board it was not overly hot or smelly. I have smelt it when it has been abused. Synthetic trans oil smells ok and still original colour.

So my question is where is the best place to attach the probe from the meter? I was thinking of using a super magnet from the local computer wrecker to attach it to the side of the gearbox sump but can anyone suggest a better place?

I am aware that the temperature light switch may be faulty but I reckon a gauge should be a better indicator. Where do I buy a temp switch from, can I get a generic switch or are they LR parts only?

    Thanks
    Adrian

Any auto parts supplier will have temp switches or temperature senders for gauges that can be added after market. Try Supercheap Auto, Repco or other similar outlet.

    Hi Adrian,

I have one of those Jaycar temp gauges but use it for the camping fridge. I don't think it would be suitable for monitoring the transmission temp though even though its states up to 150c. I reckon the plastic near the probe would melt and the probe is not a great shape for a good pickup. The other thing is forget about hearing the alarm over the Disco engine noise, its very faint. I got one of these ENGINE GUARDIAN V2 COOLANT MONITOR GAUGE ALARM WATCHDOG | eBay its up to the job and the spade sensor wraps nicely around the cooler output line (hottest point) and held in place securely in place with a hose clamp. You won't miss the alarm and flashing lights either (LOUD). Hopefully your original sensor is buggered as they trigger at 135c which usually means damage is already done as I found out : (
    Cheers

Yeah I pulled my original sensor out and yep its buggered, got continuity across the pins. Mind you I had a fair idea over the last couple of days as it was on all the time.
I have a new one on its way part # AMR 4948 which if anyone wants to try another switch has a 10mm x 1.5mm thread and switches on at 135 celcius. I do find it odd that the default setting is off for the light so if its on just unplug the sensor.

I don't know about using it on your trans.
But I do need one on my home freezer, so when I turn it of again I don't find out 4 days latter and half the meat has gone off.
