Disco 1 handbrake has me stopped
Hi all,
I have what I expect is a basic question for all you mechanics, but quite infuriating after the weekend. I had to remove the center console on my 97 V8 to get the car out of diff lock, (had all siezed up with crud, turns out i have been driving around with diff lock engaged since i had it..not good at 110 on the highway), but now hit with hammer, and all good.
But trying to put handbrake back together has me foxed, I managed to get the cable reconnected to the lever, but now the ratchet won't work - button jammed in, looks like it is fouling the cable. I have looked at RAVE, but gives no diagram on how it connects, does anyone have a diagram, or can explain where I am going wrong? Looks like "park" will have to do for now
cheers

Just found an excellant piece from Bush65 in an old thread, which I'm hoping is the answer. Seems there is a schoolboy error in which when the lever is pulled up high enough to go past the ratchet, as I am sure i did to get the clearance to remove the centre console, the part on the lever than bites into the ratchet flips the other way, so just drags across it and doesnt bite, and i am guessing the rod connecting the release button now sits lower in the lever, fouling the handbrake cable, (which is probably why i had to fight and bend past it to get the cable reconnected - sometimes brute force and ignorance dont win). Will try tonight and update, wish i had access to an exploded diagram as i, and others, might have noticed this before, bit hard to tell when looking, still have imprint of T-Bar on my right cheek......
